Natalie Dumas opens states by taking down a 46-year-old 800 meet record set by a four-time Olympian!!!!!!!!

Natalie Dumas got her final state Group 4 meet off to a flying start with a meet record in the 800.

Dumas broke a 46-year-old meet record when she ran 2:04.19 to win the 800 in Somerset. That’s just off her season-best 2:04.00 from Icahn Stadium earlier this month. Dumas ran a state-record 2:00.11 when she won West Philly Nationals last June.

Dumas broke the meet record of 2:04.5 hand-timed by four-time Olympian Joetta Clark of Columbia in Piscataway in 1980. That was the oldest Group 4 record on the books.

Dumas won by 80 meters over Addison Hansen of Bergen Tech, who was 2nd in 2:12.54.

Eastern’s Jailya Ash ran within 8-100ths of a second of her PR and easily advanced in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Regional Prelims Thursday in Fayetteville, Ark.

The top three in each of six heats and the next six-best times advanced to the national quarterfinals, scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Saturday. The top 12 finishers Saturday along with the top 12 in the East Prelims advance to the NCAA Championships next month at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Everyone who ran 13.46 or faster advanced to Saturday.

Ash, who qualified for East Prelims twice while she was at UConn, has never before advanced to the second round.

Ash’s PR is 13.19 with legal 1.7 wind from this year’s Drake Relays last month in Des Moines, Iowa. She ran within 1-100th of a second of that PR last weekend when she placed 6th in the finals at the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, Neb., with a 13.20.

The top 12 in the East Regional and the top 12 in the West Regional advance to the NCAA Championships next month at Hayward Field in Eugene.
