Winslow Township sophomore Jasmine Jackson shattered the South Jersey hurdles record Sunday morning in the qualifying rounds at the Meet of Champions.
Jackson won the 4th heat in 7.87, breaking the South Jersey record set in 2006 by Pleasantvile’s Nia Ali and matched in 2012 by Winslow’s Ste’yce McNeil.
Jackson’s time is No. 6 in state history and 3rd-fastest in meet history, behind five-time Olympic gold medalis Sydney McLaughin, who won the 2015 final at the Bubble in 7.82, and Plainfield’s Charmaine Walker, who won the 1997 race at Jadwin Gym in 7.86.
The fastest previous time in a qualifying race was McLaughlin’s 7.97 in the semifinals in 2015.
Jackson’s prvious PR was 7.90 at the Armory in January. Her 7.87 is 5th-fastest in the U.S. this year and tied with Nia Armstrong of Sickles High in Tampa for fastest by a sophomore.
Also qualifying for the final later Sunday were Brianna Growalt of Atlantic County Tech, whose 8.09 was 2nd-fastest in the trials, Pennsauken senior Olivia Dupree, who was 4th-fastest at 8.16, Willingboro junior Trinity Brapoh, 5th-fastest at 8.29 and Mainland senior Comryn DeMorat, 8th-fastest at 8.34.
So South Jersey has four of the top five going into the finals.
