The first indoor Meet of Champions was held at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym in 1969, but it wasn’t until 1974 that South Jersey had its first winner, with Gateway’s Greg Stremmel holding off Williamstown’s Bob Marino in the mile, both running under the previous South Jersey record of 4:19.6 set by Stremmel a few weeks earlier at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. Stremmel ran 4:18.2 and Marino 4:18.4.
Now, 52 years later, South Jersey is up to 209 Meet of Champions winners. With this year’s Meet of Champions around the corner on Sunday at Ocean Breeze, we thought it would be fun to take a look at every South Jersey athlete to win a M-of-C title. This will be the 57th annual boys meet – every year since 1969 minus 2021 – and the 46th annual girls meet – every year since 1980 minus 2021.
