St. Augustine senior Marc Maccario ran the fastest 400 in New Jersey this year Wednesday evening at the Ott Center.
Maccario won the 400 at the Shoe Company Elite Invitational in 48.77, 3rd-fastest in Atlantic County history behind Xander Roberts-Bogin of Pleasantville [48.45 in 2022] and Amir Brock of Egg Harbor [48.48 in 2017]. National hurdles champ Sincere Rhea won the Meet of Champions outdoors in 2019 and ran 47.89 but never ran a 400 indoors.
Maccario ran 48.33 outdoors at last year’s Meet of Champions at Pennsauken, but his indoor PR prior to Wednesday was a 49.34 from earlier this month, also at the Ott Center.
Maccario was first through 200 in 22.67 and came back in 26.10, leading four other runners under 50 seconds.
Junior John Froelich was 2nd in 49.42, an Overbrook school record, and Eastern senior Ashton Gage placed 3rd in 49.42, 12th-fastest on the all-time Camden County indoor list. Moorestown senior Sean Sobin, who never ran until last year’s outdoor season, dropped his lifetime best from 5.19 at last year’s outdoor sectionals at Delsea all the way down to 49.78, 10th-fastest all-time Burlington County and 2nd in school history indoors to Brandon Outlaw’s 47.90 at 2017 Armory Nationals. Also under 50 was Rancocas Valley senior Julian Coppage-Seepersaud, who PR’d at 49.82 and broke the school indoor record of 50.23 set in 2017 by Brian Merriman at Ocean Breeze.
Maccario, Froelich, Gate, Sobin and Coppage-Seepersaud now rank No. 1, 7, 8, 13 and 14 in New Jersey this year.
Also racing into the current New Jesey top-25 were Egg Harbor Township junior Xavier Aucule [50.13], Timber Creek junior Timothy Whitaker [50.14] and Winslow senior Prince Owusu-Twum [50.15].
