In his first track race for Kingsway, Michigan transfer [we think] Payton Veilleux wins Ocean Breeze 1,600, runs 24-second PR!!!!!!

Kingsway junior Payton Veilleux won the 1,600 Monday at Ocean Breeze, and assuming it’s the same Payton Veilleux who began his high school career at Mount Pleasant High School in Michigan – about halfway between Detroit and the Straits of Mackinac – this is a huge PR.

(btw … “Mackinac” is pronounced “Mackinaw.”)

Veilleux ran 4:32.54 and won the 1,600 at the SJTCA meet at Ocean Breeze, finishing 15 meters ahead of 2nd-place Tyler Hurst of Steinert.

If it’s a different Payton Veilleux – and how many Payton Veilleux’s can there really be? – it’s the first track race of his life.

We’ll operate under the assumption this is the same Veilleux who competed from the 2023 XC season through the 2025 outdoor season for Mount Pleasant and had a 1,600 PR of 4:45.09 at a meet this past March at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track at Central Michigan University, also in Mount Pleasant.

According to the Michigan Milesplit page, Veilleux only ran two races last spring with a 1,600 best of 4:56.97 in a meet in April at his home high school. He resurfaced at Kingsway this past fall, placing 17th in Group 4 Sectionals at DREAM Park in 16:26.92.

So assuming it’s the same Veilleux, this is a 24 ½-second PR.

Winslow’s Amariah Arango, Olivia Okaro, Cinniya Robinson and Amaya Jones run fast early 4×4 at Ocean Breeze!!!!!!

The Winslow girls put together a hot early 4-by-4 Sunday at Ocean Breeze.

Sophomore Amariah Arango, senior Olivia Okaro, junior Cinniya Robinson and junior Amaya Jones won the 4-by-4 at the 71st annual Bishop Loughlin Games in 3:54.37.

Arango led off in 61:50, followed by Okaro in 57.18, Robinson 56.96 and Jones anchoring in 58.75 well clear of 2nd-place Benjamin Banneker Academy of Brooklyn, who ran 3:57.08.

Winslow’s time is No. 16 in South Jersey history indoors and No. 9 on the all-time Camden County list.

That also 5th-fastest in the U.S. this year in the early going and fastest by a New Jersey school.

Winslow set the South Jersey indoor record of 3:44.74 in March in Boston with Jasmine Jackson, Skyhe Seamon, Arango and Robinson in the lineup.

A RECORD-SETTING JUMPS DOUBLE FOR GLASSBORO’S MOSES ROBLES AT OTT CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

A record-setting jumps double today at the Ott Center by Glassboro sophomore Moses Robles, who broke the South Jersey sophomore class triple jump record and the Gloucester County sophomore long jump record.

Robles won the triple jump at 46-4 ½ and long jump at 21-9 ¾.

The best previous indoor sophomore long jump mark I could find is a 43-0 ¾ by Haddon Heights’ Dominique Irons at 2011 Easterns at the Armory. The previous Gloucester County sophomore indoor mark was 41-4 ½ by Delsea’s Tymir Kizee at a meet in 2016 at the Armory.

Nobles’s 21-9 ¾ is the best sophomore long jump by a South Jersey athlete since Chase Campbell of Lenape went 22-7 ½ in a meet at Lehigh’s Rauch Fieldhouse.

On the all-time South Jersey list, Nobles is now No. 10 in the triple jump. He’s No. 5 all-time in Gloucester County in the triple and No. 8 in the long jump.

On Saturday, he hit 21-9 ½ on his 1st attempt and then 21-9 ¾ on his 2nd  before fouling on his 3rd.  In the triple, he opened with a 44-4 ¾ then jumped 45-8 on his 2nd jump before hitting 46-4 ½ on his 3rdand final attempt.

Robles had indoor PRs of 21-1 and 40-2 as a freshman – he only triple jumped once indoors last year – and outdoors went 21-3 ¼ and 44-5 ½.

Cherry Hill East’s Addison Weiss, Moorestown’s Payton Derer lock up in fast early 1,600 at Ott Center!!!!!!

Good early 1,600 race Saturday morning between sophomores Addison Weiss of Cherry Hill East and Payton Derer of Moorestown at the Ott Center, with Weiss winning in 5:08.21 and Derer 2nd in 5:10.82.

It was the first 1,600 or mile race ever for Weiss, who didn’t run indoors last year and only ran the 800 outdoors. This was her 1st race since she placed 13th at the XC Meet of Champions at Holmdel last month.

Weiss broke the indoor school record of 5:08.68 set by Theresa Cattuna at the 2005 Meet of Champions at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym. Cattuna holds the Cherry Hill East outdoor record with her 4:59.27 at the 2005 outdoor Meet of Champions at South Plainfield.

Weiss closed in 72.79 and 34.26 and negative split 2:36.52 and 2:31.69.

Derer, who ran a PR 58.89 for 2nd to Pennsauken sophomore and former teammate Hope Edwards in the 400, was also running her first indoor 1,600. She ran 5:02.40 outdoors last spring at the Meet of Champions at Pennsauken. Derer ran 2:14.83 last spring.

It looks like Derer broke the Moorestown indoor school record. The fastest time I could find is Noelia Reyes’ 5:20.26 from last year’s state Group 2 meet at the Bubble. Before that it was 5:25.09 by Meghan Hughes in 2002. Outdoors, Brianna Rogers ran 5:04.85 at the 2005 state Group 3 meet at Egg Harbor.

Also under 5:20 was Haddonfield junior Madison Kelsey, who placed 3rd in 5:19.88, lowering her PR from 5:22.91 at 2024 outdoor Group 2 states at Delsea.

Kingsway sophomore Chase Daciw wins hot 55-meter dash at the Bubble, closing in on school record!!!!!!

Impressive race over 60 meters Monday at the Bubble between Kingsway sophomore Chase Daciw and Monroe Township junior Adedotun Aderibigbe, with Daciw edging Aderibigbe by 1-100th of a second.

Daciw PR’d at 6.61 and Aderibigbe was 2nd at 6.62, with Oakcrest junior 3rd in 6.70 and Burlington senior Malachi Sadler 5th at 6.73.

Daciw had a 6.93 PR as a freshman, but blew that away with a 6.73 last week in Toms River before hitting 6.61 Monday. It looks like he didn’t compete outdoors last spring.

The fastest Kingsway time I could find is a 6.56 by Damon Dukes Jr. at 2022 South Jersey Group 4 Sectionals, also at the Bubble. So unless there’s a faster time somewhere Daciw is only 5-100ths of a second off the school record early in his sophomore year.

Looks like the only faster Gloucester County sophomore over the past 10 years is John Santos of Washington Township, who ran 6.58 in 2023 at Ocean Breeze.

Delsea’s Sheldon Goldsborough wins Cherokee Throwdown with big shot put PR!!!!!!

Junior Sheldon Goldsborough came within 1 ¾ inches of becoming Delsea’s latest 50-foot shot putter Monday in Marlton.

Goldsborough, who placed 4th at South Jersey Group 1 sectionals last year as a sophomore at Schalick, threw a big PR 49-10 ¾ to win the Cherokee Throwdown.

Goldsborough had an outdoor PR last year of 47-5 ½ from the Woodbury Relays and went on to place 4th at South Jersey Group 1 sectionals at Pennsauken at 45-7 ½.

His previous indoor PR looks like 43-9 from a meet this past January at the Bubble.

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time Delsea indoor 50-foot list:

65-6 … Jonathan Harris, 2025
62-0 ½ … Jason Nwosu, 2022
58-8 ¾ … Bill Goldsborough [Delsea], 2018
57-8 1/4 … Josh Awotunde [Delsea], 2013
55-7 … Greg Masso, 2024
55-4 ¾ … Ryan Knight [Delsea], 1996
54-6 ½ … Josh Caudill, 2022
54-1 ¼ … Joe Metzger [Delsea], 2020
53-7 ½ … Savien Higgs, 2025
52-5 ½ … Tyler Habersham-Agbemenu, 2024
51-5 ½ … Juan Romero, 2024
51-0 ¼ … Kevin Gilliano, 2019
50-9 ½ … Jake Phelan, 2023
50-8 … Will Sneathen, 2018
50-1 ¼ … Dakota Bravero, 2014

DELSEA’S HANNAH NUHFER DESTROYS GLOUCESTER COUNTY INDOOR SHOT RECORD IN SEASON OPENER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delsea senior Hannah Nuhfer, in her first meet since she won a national discus title, broke the Gloucester County shot put record.

In June, Nuhfer threw 178-9 at Franklin Field Nationals, the No. 19 throw in U.S. scholastic history.

On Tuesday, she threw 45-1 at the Cherokee Throw Down #1, breaking the Gloucester County (and Delsea) indoor record of 44-3 ½ thrown by Jocelyn White at the 2004 state Group 3 meet at Jadwin Gym in Princeton.

Series information not available, but Nuhfer topped her indoor PR of 41-9 ½ set last year at Easterns at the Armory.

Nuhfer threw her outdoor-best 47-9 at South Jersey Group 3 sectionals at Delsea in May, setting a South Jersey shot put record.

Her 45-1 is No. 5 in South Jersey history indoors and best since Cydney Thomas of Haddon Heights threw 46-1 at 2019 South Jersey Group 1 Sectionals at the Bubble.

Glassboro senior Sunsarai Moore, the outdoor state Group 1 champ in both the shot and discus last spring, placed 2nd with a 37-11 ½, and Hammonton senior Mitra Sampson, the state Group 3 shot runner-up last spring, was 3rd with a 36-9.

Was this year’s Haddonfield team the best in South Jersey history???

As we hit a little lull before indoor track really kicks into gear, I wanted to take a moment to look back at Haddonfield’s astonishing cross country season.

Is this the greatest XC team in South Jersey history?

They’re in the mix.

All the Bulldogs did was win sectionals by 63 points with only one of their usual top five, scored 27 points to win states, then score just 90 points at the Meet of Champions to finish 2nd behind only the No. 3 team in the country.

Then they took on the best teams in the Northeast at Nike Cross Regionals and placed 2nd to that same No. 3 team in the country to earn a berth at Nationals in Oregon, where they finished 9th in the entire freaking country.

That made them only the second New Jersey public school ever to finish in the top 10 at Nike Nationals. And the first since the legendary West Windsor-Plainsboro North team with the Rosa twins in 2009.

Haddonfield also placed 2nd in last year’s Meet of Champions – and actually had a slightly lower score – but finished 4th at Nike Cross Regionals and didn’t make it to Oregon.

And they did all this without their projected 5th man, senior Aaron Keith, the state 800 champ last year, who got hurt early in the season and didn’t run after a batch meet on Sept. 9.

There are about 30,000 high schools in the U.S. and eight finished ahead of Haddonfield.

There are plenty of terrific programs in South Jersey. Just this year, Haddonfield placed 2nd, Cherokee 5th, Cherry Hill East 7th, Ocean City 9th and Glassboro 12th out of Group 1 at the Meet of Champions.

Five of the top public schools in the state came from South Jersey.

A phenomenal coaching job by Matt Cieslik, who is assisted by former Haddonfield runner Andrew Gostovich.

There have been a ton of extremely successful XC teams in South Jersey history. Mainland Regional won the MoC in 2002 and 2003. Haddonfield won in 2001, placed 2nd three times and 3rd three other times. Cherokee has placed 2nd or 3rd five times. Holy Cross was second back in 1983, and Washington Township and Cherry Hill East have each had 3rd-place finishes as well. Then there were the great Paul VI teams, who from 1984 won four Meet of Champions, placed 2nd twice and 3rd three times.

Interesting to note that Cieslik ran on that 1988 Paul VI team, placing 14th at the Meet of Champions, he was an assistant to George Steinhoff on the 1994 team that beat CBA by 18 at the MoC and he coached the 2014 Cherry Hill East team that finished 3rd in the 2014 meet, behind only CBA and South Brunswick. He arrived at Haddonfield in 2023 as co-head coach with the late legendary Nick Baker before taking over the program.

If you had to pick a best team in South Jersey before this year, you’d probably pick one of those Paul VI teams, who were completely dominant. The 1988 team scored just 62 points in winning the MoC, the 1989 team scored just 50, and the 1994 team 63 points.

There’s no way to really compare or declare an all-time best because there were no Nationals until 2004.

But it is safe to say that if you lined up all the best teams in South Jersey history on the starting line together at Holmdel, it would be one hell of a race.

Rutgers-Camden’s Abdulbasid Shodolu from Highland records massive high jump PR at Ocean Breeze!!!!!!!!

Abdulbasid Shodolu had a season-best 5-10 in the high jump last spring for Highland, cleared 6-0 twice in his high school career – outdoors as a junior, indoors as a senior – and never finished higher than 12th at states.

Look at him now.

Shodolu, now a freshman at Rutgers-Camden, cleared 6-4 ¾ at Ocean Breeze this weekend, some 4 ¾ inches above his high school PR.

In his first collegiate meet, also at Ocean Breeze, he PR’d at 6-0 ¾, before his huge breakthrough on Friday afternoon.

Shodolu cleared 5-10 ¾ and 6-0 ¾ on his third attempts before PR’ing for the first time with a 6-2 ¾ on his 1st jump and then PR’ing again at 6-4 ¾ on his 1st try. He took three jumps at 6-6 ¾.

Rutgers-Camden’s top high jumper is Shodolu’s high school teammate, Jayden Deleon, who is now his teammate again at Rutgers-Camden. Deleon was the indoor Meet of Champions winner last year – also at Ocean Breeze – and is tied for No. 2 in NCAA Division 3 so far this year at 6-8 ¾, which he’s cleared twice. DeLeon has a PR of 6-10 ¼ from last year’s indoor South Jersey Group 3 Sectionals at Toms River.

Deptford boys lead four schools at 1:31 in hot season-opening 4×2 at Ott Center!!!!!!

Deptford led four schools who ran 1:31 and change in the 4-by-200 Saturday at the initial South Jersey Track Coaches Association meet at the Ott Center in West Philly.

Deptford won the race in 1:31.04, Williamstown ran 1:31.33, Rancocas Valley 1:31.52 and Overbrook 1:31.81.

Overbrook and R.V. ran in the 3rd section, Deptford and Williamstown in the 4th.

Senior Kareem Brown, senior Kyle Jackson, junior Xavion Holmes and Damon Albertson ran for senior Deptford; senior Jasiah Gibbons, junior Joshua George-Oyewole, sophomore Elijah Campbell and junior Ian Israel Jr. for Williamstown; senior Julian Coopage-Seepersaud, junior Samir Barber, junior Ethan Jones and junior Jor-el Santiago for Rancocas Valley; and junior Axcel Bailey, junior John Froelich, senior Anthony Powell and junior Jaiden Mitchell for Overbrook.

For Williamstown and Overbrook, those performances are school records. Williamstown’s previous school record was 1:32.33 this past January at the Ott Center. Overbrook’s school record was 1:33.45 in 2016 at Ocean Breeze with Quincy Fairey, Tevin Taylor, Jermaine Corbett and Nykols Rodriguez.

Deptford and R.V. have both run sub-1:30 several times.
