Junior Egypt Bolan became Lindenwold’s first-ever outdoor Meet of Champions winner Wednesday with the best high jump clearance by a New Jersey girl in six years.
Bolan cleared a lifetime-best 5-9 to win the Meet of Champions high jump at Pennsauken. It’s the best clearance by a New Jersey high jumper since 2019, when Timber Creek’s Tierra Hooker cleared 5-10 for the fifth time and won the Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.
Bolan’s jump is No. 18 in state history – but only one inch from the No. 4 mark – and it’s also tied for No. 5 in South Jersey history.
Bolan had a 5-2 PR until this indoor season. She PR’d at 5-6 in a meet at the Bubble, then followed that up with several more 5-8 clearances, including one to win the indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.
She was consistently over 5-6 and 5-8 this spring and PR’d with a 5-8 ¾ at the Penn Relays, where she placed 3rd at the Penn Relays, where she was the top American.
Unbelievably, the Meet of Champions results don’t show high jump progression, because the NJSIAA is apparently running track meets in 1979 these days. So we don’t know where Bolan entered the competition or what height she attempted after winning at 5-9. [Then again, that shouldn’t be a surprise. The official results also show 20 girls clearing 6-5. And also list Bolan with a “DNS,” indicating Did not Start. So who knows.] If anybody reading this has her progression info please shoot it over to me in the comment’s section!
Hooker is one of six South Jersey women who have jumped at least 5-10, including three 6-footers: Priscilla Frederick of Sicklerville and Paul VI cleared 6-3 in 2015, MaryBeth Labosky of Shamong Township and Holy Cross cleared 6-1 ½ in 1992 and Willingboro graduate Kenady Wilson cleared 6-0 ¾ in 2022. Also Megan Kirschling of West Deptford cleared 5-10 ½ in 2012 and Bryanna Craig of Millville 5-10 in 2022.
