Willingboro graduate Chris Johnson, a junior at Delaware State, popped a shot put PR and the No. 1 throw this year in the MEAC Saturday Friday in the Gotham Cup at Ocean Breeze.
Johnson threw 54-3 1/4 on his final attempt to pass Robbie Babson of Georgian Court, who was leading with a 54-0 3/4, and win the event.
Johnso’s previous indoor PR was 54-2 from a 2nd-place finish at the indoor MEAC meet in Virginia Beach this past February.
He also had a 53-5 1/4 in his series on Friday.
Delaware State is one of few programs that doesn’t list school records on its web site, but the best throw I found was a 54-6 1/2 outdoors by Tyrell Martin two years ago. Johnson’s 54-3 1/4 is the best indoor mark I found going back to 2010, which is as far back as TFRRS goes.
