Winslow senior Dominic Bassey ran the fastest 600 by a New Jersey runner this year at the Bishop Loughlin Games at Ocean Breeze, and senior teammate Jayden Poteat wasn’t far behind.
Bassey finished 1st out of 74 runners in the three-lap race in 1:21.36, 8th-fastest in South Jersey history and about half a second shy of Bryce Tucker’s Camden County record of 1:20.79 at the Armory in 2022.
Bassey’s time is No. 3 in the U.S. this year, according to the MileSplit database. Bassey ran one previous 600 and clocked 1:27.30 a year ago at the Armory. He ran 1:52.15 in the 800 and 53.35 in the intermediates last spring.
Poteat ran 1:22.74 and placed 4th, missing the all-time South Jersey top-10 by just 3-10ths of a second.
Poteat ran 10.69, 21.48 and 48.23 last spring and was the state Group 3 champion at 400 meters.
