ANOTHER BOMB FOR JONATHAN HARRIS, #2 IN U.S. THIS YEAR!!!!!!

Jonathan Harris keeps inching closer to the South Jersey shot put record, and for the second time in three days he improved on the No. 2 throw in South Jersey history.

Harris, a Delsea senior, threw 65-6 at the Len Pietrewicz Invitational at the Armory on Monday, improving on his 65-2 ½ at the Ott Center in West Philly on Saturday.

That’s No. 2 in South Jersey history indoors or out behind Braheme Days 70-8 at 2012 Easterns at the Armory.

Once again, no series information.

Harris remains No. 2 nationally, according to the MileSplit U.S. database, nut he’s only about a foot behind Alex Jackson of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, who threw 66-6 ¼ on Dec. 14 at something called the NEC Winter Invitational in Boston, and I spent about 10 minutes trying to find out what NEC stands for and it’s never written out anywhere so let’s just guess it means Northeastern Conference.
Harris’s throw is 9th-best in state history indoors – moving up from 10th – and 19th-best in state history on the combined indoor / outdoor list – up from 20th.

He broke his own Gloucester County indoor record for the second time this month.

Other South Jersey 50-footers so far this indoor season are Hammonton senior Anthony Liakhnovich [60-2], Delsea senior Savien Higgs [53-4 ¾] and Williamstown senior Jayron Lewis [52-9 ¼].

Eastern’s Natalie Dumas opens with crazy fast 400 split and 55 PR at Ott Center!!!!!!

Eastern junior Natalie Dumas, the national intermediate hurdles champ as a sophomore, opened her 2024-25 season Saturday with a 200-meter dash PR and a speedy 400 leg on the Vikings’ 4-by-4.

In the 200 at the SJTCA meet at the Ott Center inh West Philly, Dumas finished 3rd behind Sianni Wynn and Ryan Jennings, who ran 23.79 and 23.93 for the 1st- and 3rd-fastest times in state history. Dumas ran 24.93, 6th-fastest in New Jersey this year and a big PR. She had never broken 26 seconds indoors, and her outdoor PR was a 25.29 at last year’s Camden County Championships at Haddon Township, where she placed 2nd to Wynn.

That 24.93 is the fastest FAT time in school history, although Jennifer Jackson ran a hand-timed 24.5 at the 2003 Varsity Classic at the Armory. The previous-fastest FAT time was a 25.09 by Jewel Ash at the 2020 Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Surprisingly, Olympic sprinter English Gardner never ran faster than 25.75 in high school. That was at the 2008 Hispanic Games at the Armory.

But Dumas’s best work Saturday came in the 4-by-4, which she anchored in 54.28. Junior Adriana Marella, senior Jasmine Davies and sophomore Poetry Anderson also ran for Eastern, who won the race in 4:07.62.

Other splits of note: Pennsauken junior 2nd leg Olivia Dupree 60.06, Pennsauken junior anchor Sanaya Dupree 60.26, Mainland senior anchor Ava McDole 60.59 and Atlantic County Tech sophomore anchor Violet Golden 60.76.

Dumas ran 53.16 outdoors last spring to win the Meet of Champions at Pennsauken. Her indoor 400 PR is 56.72 in March at Ocean Breeze.

DELSEA’S JONATHAN HARRIS BOMBS #2 SHOT PUT IN SOUTH JERSEY HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jonathan Harris unloaded the 2nd-best shot put throw in South Jersey history – indoors or out – Saturday in a four-team shot put-only meet in Lincroft.

Unfortunately, series information is not listed in the results, but Harris won the event with a throw of 65-2 ½, 2nd in South Jersey history indoors or outdoors behind only to Bridgeton’s Braheme Days Jr., who threw 70-8 at 2012 Easterns at the Armory.

Tweets no longer seem to embed in WordPress, so click here to watch Harris’s 65-foot throw.

Harris’s throw is 10th-best in state history indoors and 20th-best in state history on the combined indoor / outdoor list.

He broke his own Gloucester County indoor record of 63-8 ½ from last weekend at the Ott Center in West Philly.

He also broke the overall Gloucester County record of 64-10 ¼ set by Paulsboro’s Jon Kalnas at the 1997 Meet of Champions at South Plainfield.

According to the MileSplit national database, Harris’s mark is 2nd-best in the U.S. this winter. Alex Jackson of Peabody (Mass.) Veterans Memorial High threw 66-6 ¼ at a meet in Boston earlier this month.

Winslow’s Jayden Poteat smashes Camden County 200-meter dash record!!!!!!

In his first open 200 of the year, Winslow Township senior Jayden Poteat ran the 6th-fastest time in South Jersey history and smashed the Camden Conty record Saturday morning at the Ott Center in West Philly.

Poteat won the 200 in 21.72 at the South Jersey Track Coaches Association Meet, with Camden Azir Lee also running sub-22 for 2nd place. Lee ran 21.91, 5th-fastest on the all-time Camden County list and a school record.

He broke the Camden County record of 21.75 set by Pennsauken’s Premier Wynn when he won the 2023 Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze. The previous Winslow record was 21.89 set by Reuben McCoy at the 2004 Hispanic Games at the Armory.

Poteat has crazy range from the 55 up to the 600. He won the 55 earlier Saturday in a lifetime-best 6.52 over Camden’s Jaiden Steele, who ran 6.62. Poteat’s 6.52 is 7th-fastest in New Jersey so far this year. And last weekend at the Bishop Loughlin Games at Ocean Breeze he ran 35.39 for 300 meters, No. 3 in the state this year, and 1:22.74 for 600 meters, No. 2 in the state this year (behind teammate Dominic Bassey’s 1:21.36).

As for Lee, he broke the Camden FAT record for 200 meters, a 22.06 set by Albert Newkirk in Boston when he placed 2nd at National Scholastic Indoors at the Reggie Lewis Center back in 1996. Jamar Ervin and Carl Smith both ran hand-timed 21.9s, Ervin in 2002 and Smith in 2005.

At the time Vereen ran it, that was the national scholastic record.

Timber Creek senior Ryan Jennings, whose 24.09 last week was 6th-fastest in state history, ran 2nd in 23.93, which is now No. 3 in state history behind Wynn and Vereen.

Wynn and Jennings are now No. 1 and No. 2 nationally, according to the MileSplit database.

Outdoors last spring, Wynn ran 23.24 wind-aided and 23.79 with legal wind. Jennings ran 23.86.

Earlier Saturday, Wynn ran 7.00 to win the 55-meter dash – No. 5 in the U.S. this year – and a PR 8.28 to win her newest event, the 55-meter hurdles – No. 4 in New Jersey this year.

Camden boys fly to 3rd-fastest 800-meter relay in U.S. this year!!!!!!!!

Juniors Jaiden Steele, Chase Robinson and Christian Braxton and senior Azir Lee opened the relay season with a hot 800-meter relay win for Camden at Ocean Breeze.

Steele, Robinson, Braxton and Lee ran 1:28.77, fastest time in New Jersey this year and 3rd-fastest in the country, according to the MileSplit national database.

It’s Camden’s fastest time in 18 years, since the Panthers ran 1:28.48 with Terry Alston, Chuckie Waugh, Zachkery Clarke and Sherman Goree at the 2007 Hispanic Games at the Armory. (And thanks to the White Plains [N.Y.] Journal News for running complete meet results, including names for all winning relay teams. Those were the days when newspapers covered track the way it should be covered and thanks to Newspapers.com I was able to find out who ran for Camden that day !)

Camden’s time is No. 8 in South Jersey history and tied for No. 22 in state history.

Camden set the state record of 1:26.90 with Dwayne Lewis, Sherron Bullock, Alonzo Brown and Carl Smith at 2004 Easterns at the Armory. Vineland was 2nd in that race at 1:28.18 (with Jamar Byrd, Darren Ford, Bryce Bartley and Marcus Lee).

Deptford was 2nd in 1:32.03, 6th-fastest this year in New Jersey, with junior Kareem Brown, senior Neo Clark-Tabb, junior David Pearson and sophomore Xavion Holmes.

Winslow’s Jasmine Jackson smashes South Jersey freshman hurdles record again!!!!!!

Winslow Township’s Jasmine Jackson destroyed her own South Jersey freshman record in the 55-meter hurdles and moved ito the top 20 in South Jersey history at the 70th annual Bishop Loughlin Games at Ocean Breeze.

Jackson ran 8.42 at the Ott Center earlier this month in her first high school meet, which broke the South Jersey freshman record of 8.46 set by Millville’s Leah Ellis at 2019 Group 4 sectionals at the Bubble.

That record lasted only 10 days because Jackson ran 8.20 in the 55-meter hurdles trials at Ocean Breeze and then 8.16 in the final, winning the race and breaking her own freshman record by more than a quarter of a second.

Jackson’s time is No. 2 in New Jersey this year and No. 1 nationally among freshmen, according to MileSplit’s national database, and No. 2 on the all-time state freshman list.

Her time is also fastest by a South Jersey hurdler since 2020, since Jailya Ash of Eastern ran 8.03 and Jewel Ash ran 8.15. It’s No. 12 on the all-time but No. 17 on the all-time South Jersey list.

Jackson also won the 300-meter dash in 40.07 and a 40.22 in the trials. That 40.07 is No. 8 all-time South Jersey and No. 1 among freshmen. Sianni Wynn of Pennsauken ran 39.17 at the Armory in 2022. Wynn also holds the South Jersey record of 38.66 from the Armory this past February.
