Freshman Jack Tindall ran the fastest time on any course by a New Jersey freshman in at least 25 years (and probably ever), and Cherokee won its 6th straight South Jersey Group 4 title and 14th overall Saturday with the fastest single-race time in DREAM Park history.
Tindall won the race in 15:26 and Cherokee topped Cherry Hill East 32-42 in a battle of New Jersey’s 5th- and 6th-ranked teams.
Cherry Hill East went 2-3 with seniors Brody Bogos and Brandon Lyons, but Cherokee put its next three before East’s third runner – senior Liam Tindall [5th in 15:40], sophomore Benjamin Realley [6th in 15:41] and senior Enzo Corona [8th in 15:43]. Senior Benjamin Weiner and sophomore Sean Sooy placed 12th and 14th for the Chiefs in 15:58 and 16:01.
Cherokee averaged 15:42.17, breaking its own single-race course record of 15:44.60 that they set at the Olympic Conference Championships earlier this month.
For Cherry Hill East after Bogos and Lyons, junior Will Nelson placed 10th in 15:50, junior Alvin Lin 11th in 15:51 and sophomore Cian Sherlock 16th in 16:05.
Cherry Hill East averaged 15:47.01, 3rd-fastest in course history behind only Cherokee’s two performances this year.
Tindall broke his own freshman course record of 15:32.50 set at the Olympic Conference meet. His 15:26 is the fastest time by a New Jersey freshman on any course on record. The MileSplit database goes back to 2000.
Cherokee and Cherry Hill East runners took 14 of the first 23 spots in the race.
Also in the top 15 and headed to states are Millville senior Arjun Patel [9th in 15:48], Kingsway sophomore Ryan Duffy [13th in 15:59] and Williamstown junior Dominic Burgio [15th in 16:01].
Cherokee won its first sectional title in 1988 and has since won championships in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Cherokee’s six straight sectional titles is the 3rd-longest streak in South Jersey sectional history. Haddonfield has won 21 in a row in Group 2, and Haddon Township won seven straight in Group 1 from 2008 through 2015. Haddonfield also won six straight in Group 1 from 1982 through 1987.
Since 1997, Cherokee has won 13 of 28 Group 4 titles.
