Peyton Shute smashed his own South Jersey 1,600 record and posted the 9th-fastest time in state history in a historic performance at the Meet of Champions Wednesday at Pennsauken.
Shute ran 4:05.27, breaking his own South Jersey record of 4:06.84 – converted from a 4:08.28 full mile at Icahn Stadium in New York last month. While you can’t convert 1,600 times to mile times, you can convert miles to 1,600, so Shute will be credited with the South Jersey mile record at 4:08.28 and the South Jersey 1,600 record with his 4:05.27.
The race produced four of the 14-fastest times in meet history, including the meet-record 4:04.49 by Ridgewood junior Luke Pash.
The race produced the fastest times in meet history for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th place.
Pash and Shute ran the two-fastest 1,600-meter or mile races ever in New Jersey. Every faster performance came in an out-of-state invitational or national meet.
Pash and Shute quickly gapped the field, with Shute out in 60.66 and Pash in 60.98. They came through the 800 with Shute in 2:01.83 and Pash in 2:02.10 and through 1,200 with Pash at 3:03.13 and Shute at 3:03.29. Pash closed in 61.36 and Shute in 61.99.

Shute: 60.66 / 61.17 / 61.46 / 61.99
Shute is entered in the mile at West Philly Nationals at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Field as well as the two-mile at 8:11 p.m. Friday. Pash is entered in the two-mile and will anchor Ridgewood’s distance medley on Sunday morning.
Shute set the South Jersey 3,200 record of 8:54.11 at the Glenn Loucks Games in White Plains, N.Y., in May. That’s No. 14 in state history.
