Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown, senior Aidan Ellis, junior John Santos and senior Ajani Dwyer ran the fastest 400-meter relay in New Jersey in 20 years Friday afternoon to open the South Jersey Group 4 meet at Pennsauken.
Township won the race in 41.26, breaking the Group 4 meet record of 42.43 set by Atlantic City in the 2018 meet and the overall meet record of 42.20 set by Bridgeton in Group 3, also in 2018.
They also broke the overall sectional record for the entire state, Pennsauken’s 41.86 in Central Jersey Group 3 last year at Bernards.
Township’s time is fastest in New Jersey since 2004, when Camden ran 1-100th of a second faster with a 41.25 at adidas Outdoor Nationals in Raleigh, N.C. It’s 6th-fastest in state history and 5th-fastest in South Jersey history.
Township broke the Gloucester County record of 41.47 set by Deptford at the 2018 Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.
Toms River North ran 41.93 for 2nd place.
