Woodbury’s Peyton Shute shattered the South Jersey 3,200 record Friday night at the 56th Annual Glenn Loucks Invitational at White Plains (N.Y.) High School.
Shute won ran 8:54.11 and broke the 25-year-old record of 8:55.43, set in 1999 by Murad Campbell of Overbrook at the 1999 Golden West Invitational in Folsom, Calif.
He edged Shane Murphy of Hunter College Campus Schools in Manhattan. Murphy was 2nd in 8:54.71 and Elijah Gentry of Brooklyn Tech ran 8:55.11 for 3rd.
His time is No. 14 in state history and fastest by a Group 1 runner since Buck Logan of Bernards ran 8:48.91 [converted from two miles] in 1979.
Shute was out in 4:28.38 and came back in 4:25.73, closing in 65.18 and 31.83. He came through 3,000 meters in 8:22.28, which is No. 2 in South Jersey history, behind Haddonfield’s Jim Smith, who ran 8:18.30 at 1980 Golden West.
Shute broke the Gloucester County record of 9:01.9 [converted from two miles] set in 1979 by Gateway’s Mike Mantini.
Shute’s previous PR was a 9:05.99 when he placed 2nd at indoor Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze in March.
Earlier this month, Shute ran a 4:08.28 full mile, which also set a South Jersey record.
