Shaelan McNally runs 5th-fastest 1,600 in South Jersey history, one of only 9 girls in NJ history to run sub-2:12 and sub-4:53!!!!!!!!

Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally ran the 5th-fastest 1,600 in South Jersey history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

McNally placed 3rd in 4:52.90, the 9th-fastest time in meet history and 3rd-fastest ever by a South Jersey girl, behind 1983 winner Michelle Rowen of Washington Township [4:48.5 hand-timed] and Haddonfield’s Briana Gess, who placed 3rd in 2016 in 4:51.60.

McNally negative-split the race, out in 72.68 and 2:28.69 and back in 75.46 and 2:24.22, with a final lap of 32.76.

It’s been quite a stretch for McNally, who never broke five minutes for 1,600 meters indoors or outdoors until Feb. 16, when she ran 4:57.06 at the Parochial A state meet at the Bubble. Before that, he PR was an outdoor 5:01.44 last May in a meet at Delsea. So she’s dropped her PR almost nine seconds in three weeks.

She also ran 2:11.85 late last month at Ocean Breeze Elite, 3rd-fastest in South Jersey history. She’s now one of only nine girls in state history (and one of two from South Jersey) to run sub-2:12 and sub-4:53:

Paige Sheppard [Union Catholic], 2024 [2:09.79, 4:48.13]
Shaelan McNally [Paul VI], 2024 [2:11.85, 4:52.90]

McNally, who’s from Haddon Heights, will race the two-mile at Boston Nationals this weekend. She has a PR of 10:48.08 from outdoor states last spring at Franklin Township. She ran 10:59.26 in a Ocean Breeze in January.

Cherokee senior Kerry O’Day also had a big race, placing 7th with a PR 4:58.54, 6th-fastest in Burlington County history. O’Day, like McNally, never broke 5:00 until last month. She PR’d with a 4:59.23 at states at the Bubble last month before her 4:58.54 on Sunday. Cherokee is entered in the distance medley, 4-by-8 and 4-by-mile at Boston Nationals.

Winslow senior Darrell Jackson Jr. and seniors Jayden Poteat, Dominic Bassey and Chukwuemeka Ajaegbulemh ran the 6th-fastest 4-by-400 in South Jersey indoor history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Winslow placed 3rd in 3:18.25, the 5th-fastest time in the meet’s 55-year history and 2nd-fastest ever by a South Jersey school. It’s also No. 5 nationally, according to the MileSplit national database.

Jackson Jr. overcame some nagging injuries to post a 51.51 leadoff, Poteat split 49.02 to move the Eagles into 3rd place, Bassey – who broke the Camden County 800 record earlier in the day – followed with a 48.94 split and Ajaegbulemh anchored in 48.79.

The only faster time by a South Jersey school in M-of-C history is Pennsauken’s 3:15.83 meet record from last year. That’s also the only

Winslow broke its own 21-year-old school record of 3:18.46 set in 2003 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational with the team of Reuben McCoy, Dante Freeman, Khaliq Price and Duan Freeman. That was in the same race Vineland ran 3:17.15, which is No. 4 in South Jersey history. That Vineland team consisted of Shannon Sherrer, Marcus Lee, Dale Coleman and Schafer Sherrer.

Toms River North won the race Sunday in 3:17.98 and St. Peter’s Prep was 2nd in 3:18.13. The top three teams in the race are No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 in the U.S. this year.

Deptford and Timber Creek also ran strong in the 4-by-4 Sunday, Deptford out of the seeded heat, Timber Creek in the previous section.

For Deptford, seniors Darryl Wayman and Christian Berry and sophomores Kareem Brown and David Pearson ran 3:22.51 to place 5th and break a nine-year-old Gloucester County record. Wayman [50.16], Berry [50.92], Brown [50.03] and Pearson [51.41] broke the county record of 3:22.64 that Walter Victor, Anthony Hernandez, Shaquille Dixon and Eric Hill ran at 2015 Armory Nationals.

SMOKING HOT MEET OF CHAMPIONS 800: Robert Poplau smashes Burlington County record, Chris Manzo runs all-time S.J. #9, Dominic Bassey smashes Camden County record, Daniel Torres drops huge PR!!!!!!

Cherokee senior Robert Poplau shattered a 23-year-old Burlington County record Sunday when he placed 3rd in the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze in 1:53.45.

Poplau broke the hand-timed record of 1:54.8 set by Willingboro’s Marvin Lewis at 2001 Easterns at the Armory. The previous fastest FAT time was Zach McBride’s 1:55.14 a year later, also at Easterns at the Armory. Lewis’s time would convert to about 1:55.04 FAT.

Poplau’s previous PR was a 1:54.64 two weeks ago when he won the state Group 4 title at the Bubble. He ran 1:56.31 last spring. Poplau broke the 25-year-old Cherokee record of 1:56.02 set in 1999 by Dave Sitzer at states last month.

That 1:53.45 is also No. 5 in South Jersey history behind three Pleasantville runners – the Clark twins and Gabriel Moronta – and Kingsway’s Derrell Manhertz.

And it’s also 5th-fastest ever by a South Jersey runner at the Meet of Champions behind the same four half-milers.

Morris Knolls junior Luke Schagelin won the race in 1:51.93 and Passaic County Tech senior Raynier Galvez was 2nd in 1:53.19.

Egg Harbor senior Christopher Manzo placed 6th in 1:54.73, No. 9 in South Jersey history. He had just PR’d at 1:55.74 at the state Group 4 meet. Outdoors he ran 1:55.93 last spring at the Meet of Champions.

Winslow junior Dominic Bassey and Washington Township senior Daniel Torres – both racing out of the unseeded heat – also finished in the top 10 and ran big PRs. They were the top two finishers in the first of two sections.

Bassey smashed the Camden County indoor 800 record of 1:55.92 set by Pennsauken’s Bryce Tucker in a SJTCA meet last winter at Ocean Breeze. He was the No. 2 underclassman overall and lowered his PR from 1:56.66 at last year’s Easterns to 1:55.33 and placed 9th overall, No. 9 in South Jersey history.

Bassey is also the fastest South Jersey underclassman since Moronta ran 1:54.41 at the 2019 Meet of Champions at the Bubble, and he’s the No. 3 underclassman in New Jersey this year.

Torres – in his first indoor season – dropped his PR a whopping 2 ½ seconds from 1:59.15 at a SJTCA meet at the Bubble to 1:56.66 and took 10th overall.

Peyton Shute places 2nd in Meet of Champions with 3rd-fastest 3,200 in S.J. history, Nick Kuenkel 3rd with 6th-fastest time, Elijah Forrest just behind them in 4th!!!!!!

Peyton Shute ran the 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history and smashed the Gloucester County record Sunday at the Meet of Champions.

Shute ran 9:05.99 and placed 2nd to Ridgewood junior Luke Pash, who won the race at Ocean Breeze in 8:59.77 – No. 4 in the U.S. this year, according to the MileSplit national database.

The only faster times in South Jersey history were recorded by Haddonfield’s Jonathan Vitez, who ran 8:58.81 to win the 2010 Meet of Champions at the Bubble of all places and Cinnaminson’s Austin Gabay, who ran 9:00.27 to place 3rd in the 2020 Meet of Champs at Ocean Breeze.

Shute’s time is No. 11 nationally this year and breaks the Gloucester County record of 9:12.05 set by Delsea’s Andrew Littlehales at the 2022 Meet of Champions at the Bubble. Shute’s previous indoor PR was 9:13.90. He ran 9:11.11 in May outdoors at Deptford.

By 1,600 meters into the race, Pash, Shute, Cherokee senior Nick Kuenkel and Collingswood senior Elijah Forrest had gapped the rest of the field in the 2nd race in a two-section final. With 600 to go, Pash, Shute and Kuenkel had built a small lead over Forrest, who had a 50-meter lead over the rest of the pack.

Pash used a 31.95-second 14th lap to separate from Shute, and Shute closed in 32.42 on the final lap to nudge ahead of Kuenkel for 2nd.

Pash closed in 2:08.29 for his final 800, 63.09 for his final 400 and 31.06 for his final lap. Shute closed in 2:14.35, 66.84 and 32.42; Kuenkel in 2:16.49, 68.98 and 34.51; and Forrest in 2:19.82, 70.10 and 34.27.

Kuenkel’s time is No. 2 in Burlington County history behind Gabay’s 9:00.27, and Forrest’s time is No. 8 in Camden County history.

Eleven of the first 12 finishers PR’d, including Ocean City senior Matt Hoffman, who placed 10th in 9:20.98 – a Cape May County record.

Shute, Kuenkel and Forrest ran the 3rd-, 6th- and 13th-fastest times ever by South Jersey runners in an indoor Meet of Champions.

Shute, Kuenkel and Forrest are all entered in the two-mile at Boston Nationals this weekend, and Shute is also entered in the mile.

Liliah Gordon runs 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history at Meet of Champions!!!!!!

Northern Burlington’s Liliah Gordon ran the 3rd-fastest 3,200 in South Jersey history Sunday at the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Gordon ran 10:26.49 and placed 2nd to Middletown South senior Rosemary Shay, who won by just 5-100ths of a second in 10:26.44 a race that produced two of the six-fastest times in meet history.

The only South Jersey girls to run faster than Gordon indoors are Ocean City’s Brittany Sedberry in 2006 and Cherokee’s Megan Lacy in 2011.

Sedberry ran a then-state-record 10:19.30 for the full two miles at the 2006 Hall of Fame Classic at the Armory, which converts to 10:15.71 for 3,200 meters. Five years later at Armory Nationals on the same track, Lacy ran 10:27.13 for two miles, which converts to 10:23.49 for 3,200 meters.

Gordon’s time is not only the fastest by a South Jersey girl in 13 years, it’s the fastest ever by a South Jersey in state competition – sectionals, states or Meet of Champions. The previous record for a state-affiliated meet was Lacy’s 10:31.06 at the 2012 Meet of Champions at the Bubble.

Gordon’s time is No. 14 in state history and No. 2 on the all-time Burlington County list, behind only Lacy.

Shay and Gordon ran virtually neck and neck almost the entire race, and it was a two-runner race over the last 1,000 meters. Gordon closed in 74.21 and 35.73 but Shay closed in 72.94 and 34.40 and was inches ahead at the finish line. Nobody else was within 50 meters.

Gordon’s previous PR was 10:33.78 from the state Group 3 meet at the Bubble, when she defeated Shay.

The Villanova-bound Shay lowered her PR from 10:39.31, which she ran at the state Group 3 meet behind Gordon.

Cherokee senior Kerry O’Day and Ocean City junior Maeve Smith also both ran well under 11 minutes, O’Day in 8th in 10:51.65 and Smith just behind in 9th in 10:52.82.

Curtis placed 2nd last year to Union Catholic’s Alexandra Bonn, who set a meet record of 39-6 ¼. After a 38-8 ¾ on her 1st attempt Sunday at Ocean Breeze, Curtis broke the meet record with a 40-2 ½ on her 2nd jump. She hit 39-9 on her 3rd and in the finals broke her own meet record with a 40-5 ½. She added a 39-5 ¾ on her 5th jump and finished with her 3rd meet record of the day at 40-9 ¼.

Curtis averaged 39-10 ¾ on her six jumps, so her average jump Sunday exceeded the previous meet record.

Curtis, the outdoor Meet of Champions last spring at 40-7 ½, has a lifetime-best of 41-3 ¼ to place 3rd at Boston Nationals last March. She also jumped 40-10 ¼ to place 2nd at the Penn Relays last April. Sunday’s 40-9 ¼ is her 3rd-best performance ever.

Ocean City’s other indoor Meet of Champions winners were both in the 3,200 – Brittany Sedberry with a 10:44.23 in 2004 and Devon Grisbaum with 10:45.20 in 2015.

Curtis also has indoor PRs of 57.80 in the 400 and 8.33 in the hurdles and outdoor PRs of 17-8 ½ in the long jump, 15.02 in the hurdles, 56.04 in the 400 and 1:00.42 in the intermediates.

Winslow sophomore My’Syiah Brawner and Rancocas Valley senior Lauren Fadairo made it a 1-2-3 South Jersey sweep.

Brawner was 2nd with a 37-8 ¼ on her 3rd attempt, and Fadairo hit 37-6 ¼ on her 4th. Moorestown junior I’Mara Ford and Sterling senior Ayanna Brown also finished among the top eight, Ford with a 36-9 ¾ for 6th and Brown 36-6 ¼ for 8th.

Clayton’s Alanna Woolfolk does it again!!!!!! Wins FOURTH Meet of Champions high jump title!!!!!!

For the fourth time in her brilliant career, Alanna Woolfolk is a Meet of Champions winner.

Woolfolk, a senior at Clayton, cleared 5-8 on her 1st attempt to win the high jump Sunday at the 45th annual girls Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze.

Woolfolk and Edison junior Ama Boateng were the only competitors over the bar at 5-6, but Boateng had the lead when the bar was raised to 5-8 because Woolkfolk had a miss at 5-4 and Boateng was clean. They both entered at 5-0 and cleared 5-0 and 5-2 on their first attempt and they both cleared 5-6 on their second.

So Woolkfolk had to clear 5-8 just to have a chance to win, and she sailed over the bar on her first try. Boateng missed all three jumps at 5-8.

Woolfolk has now won four Meet of Champions high jump titles – all at different facilities.

Woolfolk won her first Meet of Champions as a freshman at Delsea in the spring of 2021 with a 5-6 clearance in South Plainfield. She won the indoor M-of-C as a Clayton sophomore at the Bubble in March of 2022 and then won last spring with a 5-8 at Franklin.

She’s the first South Jersey girl to win two indoor Meet of Champions high jump titles since Moorestown’s Sandy Tokoto won back-to-back in 1990 and 1991 at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym.

Woolfolk is the 4th Gloucester County girl to win mutiple indoor Meet of Champions titles. Washington Township’s legendary Michelle Rowen won the 3,200 in 1981 and 1,600 in 1982 and 1983, Williamstown’s Dana Burnett won the 400 in 1995 and 1996 and Deptford’s Kiera Lester won the 200 in 2015 and 2016.

She’s also only the 4th South Jersey girl ever to clear 5-8 at the Meet of Champions. Olympic long jumper Carol Lewis won the 1981 meet at 5-8, Winslow’s Gabrielle Bennett won the 2015 meet at 5-8 and Timber Creek’s Tierra Hooker was 2nd in 2018 at 5-8.

Winslow sophomore My’Syiah Brawner placed 3rd with a 5-4 clearance (on her 1st attempt), Moorestown junior I’Mara Ford tied for 4th and tied her PR of 5-4 (on her 2nd) and Woolfolk’s junior teammate, Miyana Johnson, cleared 5-2 and tied for 8th.

Brawner and Ford both had very busy and successful days and are two of the most versatile athletes in the state.

Brawner placed 2nd in the long jump at 18-5 and 2nd in the triple jump at 37-8 ¼ in addition to her 3rd in the high jump. She’s also hurdled as fast as 8.45 this year, and she’s the No. 1 sophomore in New Jersey in all four events.

And Ford – competing in the same three events – was 4th in the high jump, 5th with a PR 17-9 ½ in the long jump and 6th with a 36-9 ¾ in the triple jump.

Here’s a look at all 15 South Jersey indoor Meet of Champions high jump winners!

YASHAHYA BROWN SHATTERS MEET RECORD IN 2ND STRAIGHT MEET OF CHAMPIONS HURDLES VICTORY!!!!!!!!

Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown became the 7th South Jersey boy to repeat an indoor Meet of Champions title Sunday when he won the 55-meter hurdles and broke the meet record at Ocean Breeze.

Brown won the highs last year in 7.22, only 3-100ths of a second off the meet-record 7.19 run by Trenton’s Jermaine Collier in the 2012 meet at the Bubble. He ran 7.21 in the trials Sunday before winning the final in 7.18, breaking Collier’s mark by 1-100th of a second.

Brown, U.S. No. 1 with his state-record 7.06 at South Jersey Group 4 sectionals last month at the Bubble, won comfortably by about a meter over Manchester Township senior Joseph Kurak, who PR’d with a 7.30 in the final.

Williamstown senior Alexander Hollimon was 3rd in 7.42, just off his PR of 7.36 from the Bubble in January. Hollimon is No. 3 in Gloucester County history behind Brown and Delsea’s Sultan Tucker, who are both two-time Meet of Champions winners. Hollimon’s 3rd-place finish is best by a Williamstown athlete since high jumper Devon Bradham was 3rd in 2015.

Here’s a look at the six repeat winners from South Jersey in the Meet of Champions’ 55-year history, with the last three repeating in the hurdles:

Timber Creek girls edge Winslow and Willingboro to close spectacular Meet of Champions with a relay victory!!!!!!

Timber Creek junior Billie Frazier, senior Naylah Jones, senior Chloe Jones and junior Ryan Jennings ran 3:52.06 at Ocean Breeze Sunday to become the first South Jersey school in 13 years to win the indoor Meet of Champions 1,600-meter relay.

Winslow placed 2nd in 3:53.32 and Willingboro 3rd in 3:54.59 in the first 1-2-3 South Jersey sweep in 30 years, since 1994, when Willingboro [4:00.15], Washington Township [4:01.70] and Buena [4:04.44] took the first three spots at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym.

Timber Creek is the first South Jersey school to win a M-of-C 4-by-4 since Washington Township in 2011.

Timber Creek’s time is 7th-fastest in meet history, Winslow’s is 10th-fastest and Willingboro’s is 14th-fastest. Timber Crek’s 3:52.06 is 2nd-fastest ever at the indoor M-of-C by a South Jersey school behind Winslow’s 3:51.49 in 2017.

Winslow and Timber Creek came into the meet No. 1 and 2 in the state with their times at the Millrose Games at the Armory last month. Winslow ran 3:49.50 and Timber Creek 3:49.59.

The relay title is Timber Creek’s first. Timber Creek’s only previous Meet of Champions wins came from high jumpers Alicia Terrell in 2013 and Tierra Hooker in 2019.

Frazier led off with a 59.42 split, Naylah Jones ran 57.45. Chloe Jones 57.44 and Jennings 57.77.

Winslow used Olivia Okaro, Djassi Dean, Skyhe Seamon and freshman Cinniya Robinson. Okaro led off with a 59.13, Dean split 59.28, Seamon 58.07 and Robinson 56.85.

Willingboro is listed with Jaden Murry leading off in 58.35, Nester Wea running58.01, Kaila Speight splitting 1:00.55 and freshman Maya Bolden anchoring in 57.69.

Robinson’s 56.85 was the 2nd-fastest split in the race, behind Rumson-Fair Haven anchor Clemmie Lilley’s 56.39.

Willingboro’s 3:54.59 is the Chimeras’ fastest indoor time in 21 years, since the 2003 quartet of Rhea Mann [58.01], Channel Hamilton [57.12], Halimah Bashir [56.03] and Okechi Ogbuokiri [54.21] set what was then a state-record (and remains a South Jersey record) 3:45.37 at Armory Nationals. Willingboro hadn’t run this fast outdoors since 2010.

Eastern made it four South Jersey schools in the top six with a season-best 3:59.54 for sixth place. Samantha Osei-Kyei [58.73], Lomaria Tengbeh [1:01.19], Eva Sprewell [1:01.72] and Natalie Dumas [57.91] are listed as Eastern’s four runners.

Oakcrest’s Ryan Merlino moves up to #2 in South Jersey history with Meet of Champions pole vault triumph!!!!!!

Oakcrest senior Ryan Merlino became South Jersey’s first indoor Meet of Champions pole vault champ in 16 years Sunday at Ocean Breeze with the 2nd-best indoor clearance ever by a South Jersey vaulter.

Merlino cleared 15-6 on his first attempt and won on a tiebreaker over junior Cade Zeolla of West Morris Central of Washington Township, Morris County.

He’s the first South Jersey vaulter to win an indoor Meet of Champions since West Deptford senior Dan Batdorf won the 2008 meet at the Bubble with a 15-6 clearance. The only other winner from South Jersey was Delsea’s John Oberg who won the 2006 meet at Princeton at 14-0.

Although Sunday’s results don’t make sense – they show Merlino and Zeolla both with misses remaining at their last heights – it looks like Merlino was clean at 15-6 and Zeolla cleared it on his 3rd attempt. Zeolla also had misses at 14-0 and 15-0. Merlino didn’t have a miss at any height up through 16 feet.

Merlino’s mark is tied for No. 2 in South Jersey history behind only Delsea’s Marco Morales, who cleared 16-0 at Ocean Breeze at a SJTCA meet in 2020. His twin brother Nico also cleared 15-6 – when he won Group 2 states in 2019 – as did West Deptford’s Dan Batdorf when he won 2008 Easterns at the Armory.

Zeolla came in with a PR of 15-7 ½ from North Jersey 2 Group 2 sectionals at the Bubble last month and Merlino had a PR of 14-6, which he just cleared indoors for the first time last month at South Jersey Group 3 sectionals. He has an outdoor PR of 15-0 from the Atlantic County Championships last May at Stockton University in Galloway Township.

Merlino is the second Meet of Champions winner from Oakcrest. Darnell Charles won the 55-meter dash in 2012.

Merlino’s 15-6 matches the 3rd-best clearance in meet history. Bradley Jelmert of Watchung Hills set the meet-record 16-0 ¼ in 2020, breaking the mark of 16-0 set in 2013 by Craig Hunter of Robbinsville.

Clearview senior Daniel Couse cleared 13-6 and placed 6th and Cherry Hill East senior Kevin Tishey tied his PR with a 13-0 and placed 9th.

As for how the event finished, the official results show Merlino missing two attempts at 16-0 and then passing his final attempt, which isn’t that unusual. But they also show Zeolla clearing 15-6 on his 3rd attempt and then passing at 16-0. Which is possible if he felt like he didn’t have a pole to make a safe attempt at 16-0 but would be unusual with a Meet of Champions title on the line for someone who cleared 15-7 1/2 just a few days ago.
