Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo earns All-America honors after anchoring Penn’s 4×4 at NCAAs!!!!!!

Aliya Garozzo earned 2nd-team All-America honors Saturday with her anchor leg on Penn’s 1,600-meter relay team at NCAA Division 1 nationals in Boston.

Garozzo, a Sicklerville native who attended Paul VI, ran 52.65, and Penn placed 9th in 3:31.82 at the TRACK.

Penn had run an Ivy League-record 3:29.86 last month in a meet at Clemson but ran Saturday with a substitute leg because one of the regulars was injured.

According to the history page on Penn’s women’s track web site, this is the first time the Quakers have ever qualified for the 4-by-4 at indoor nationals, although it looks like nobody has bothered updating the site since 2020. Nice job by Penn’s sports information department. Maybe they’ll get around to it one of these years!

In any case, Garozzo’s specialty outdoors is the 400-meter hurdles, and she ranks 5th in Penn history at 59.76 when she placed 2nd at the 2022 Ivy League Championships in New Haven. She’s won Ivy League titles at 500 meters in 2023 and in the 60-meter hurdles last month.

Penn’s outdoor opener is March 23 in the Penn Challenge at Franklin Field.

Liliah Gordon runs 6th-fastest 5,000 in New Jersey history at Armory Nationals!!!!!!

Northern Burlington junior Liliah Gordon ran the 6th-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in state history Saturday night at Armory Nationals in New York.

Gordon ran 17:02.44 – fastest by any New Jersey runner in six years – in an insanely paced race that saw Gordon go through 1,600 meters in 5:07 and 3,200 meters in 10:43 – a time that only five New Jersey girls ran this year and only 23 South Jersey girls have ever run. Gordon’s two-mile PR was 10:41 until two weeks ago and she came through the 32 only two seconds slower!

Gordon ran 17:26.55 last year and placed 3rd. She ran 24 seconds faster this year and placed 7th.

Gordon became the first New Jersey girl ever to run 10:26, 4:57 and 17:02 indoors. Cherokee’s Megan Lacy, Sarah DiSanza of High Point and Charlotte Bednar of Lawrenceville School did it either outdoors or a combination of indoors and outdoors.

Elizabeth Leachman, a sophomore at Champion High in Boerne, Texas, won the race in 15:28.90 and broke the national high school record of 15:37.12 set in 2018 by Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High in Thiells, N.Y., in a meet in Lynchburg, Va. Leachman’s time makes her the No. 18 U.S. woman this year – of any age – and No. 3 under-20 runner in the world.

Gordon’s time is No. 3 in South Jersey history, behind Cherokee’s Megan Lacy, who ran 16:49.00 at 2012 Armory Nationals, and Olympian Marielle Hall of Haddonfield, who ran 16:55.69 at 2010 Armory Nationals.

She’s New Jersey’s fastest in an indoor 5,000 since Monica Hebner of Northern Highlands ran 16:53.91 at 2018 Armory Nationals.

The South Jersey outdoor 5,000 record is 16:50.75 by Lacy at the 2011 Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton and nobody else has run under 17:07, so Gordon’s time makes her the 3rd-fastest South Jersey girl indoors or outdoors.

This winter, Gordon ran 10:26.49 for 3,200 meters and placed 2nd in the Meet of Champions and also 4:57.28 for a full mile, 9th-fastest in South Jersey history.

Including indoor and outdoor times, Gordon’s time is 11th-fastest in state history. The combined list is below.

Woodstown’s Molly Lodge, Pennsauken’s Jasmine Pope, Triton’s Nevaeh Lorjuste earn All-America honors after Rowan’s record-setting 4×4 at Division 3 Nationals!!!!!!

Woodstown’s Molly Lodge, Pennsauken’s Jasmine Pope and Triton’s Nevaeh Lorjuste earned All-America honors Saturday with a record-setting 1,600-meter relay performance for Rowan at NCAA Division 3 Nationals in Virginia Beach.

Rowan ran 3:48.64, breaking a week-old school record and placing 5th in the fastest Division 3 relay ever run.

Rochester won out of the first section in 3:45.21, 4th-fastest in Division 3 history and only 33-100ths of a second off the record of 3:44.84 that Rochester set last year.

Rowan, racing in the 2nd section, broke its school record of 3:49.78 set last week at the AARTC Championships in Rochester.

Only 12 schools in Division 3 history have run faster than Rowan, including Rochester, 2nd-place Washington University [3:46.44], Williams [3:48.06] and Colby [3:48.64]. Rowan finished 8-1,000ths of a second behind Colby [3:48.631 to 3:48.639].

Lodge led off in 57.53, Pope split 58.23, Kathleen Pedersen of Hillsborough ran 57.16 and Lorjuste anchored in a lifetime-best 55.74.

This is the first time Rowan has earned All-America honors in a relay since 2012, when the distance medley team – with Jena Peacock of Our Lady of Mercy and Vanessa Wright of Haddonfield in the lineup – placed 7th in 11:55.14 in Grinnell, Iowa.

Yashahya Brown lowered his 60-meter hurdles time to 7.74 Saturday afternoon and advanced to the finals at Boston Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center in Brighton, Mass.

Brown, a Washington Township senior, is still No. 4 in state history and No. 3 in South Jersey history but now only 11-100ths of a second from the state record of 7.63, set by East Orange’s Cory Poole in 2017, and only 1-10th of a second from the South Jersey record of 7.64, set by St. Augustine’s Sincere Rhea in 2019.

Brown had run 7.77 in the qualifying heats earlier Saturday. The final is scheduled for 2:36 p.m. Sunday across town at the TRACK in Boston.

In the semis, Brown won the first of three semifinals to earn a large-Q – an automatic qualifier to the final. The first two finishers in each heat plus the next two-fastest times advanced.

Brown’s time was 3rd-fastest in the semis. Bradley Franklin of Thompson High in Alabaster, Ala., led all qualifiers in 7.66, and Dai’vontay Young of Dunbar High in Dayton, Ohio, ran 7.72.

Naylah Jones, Ryan Jennings run monster 60s in Boston, #3 and #6 in state history!!!!!!!

Timber Creek senior Naylah Jones shattered the South Jersey 60-meter dash record Saturday in qualifying at Boston Nationals.

Jones ran 7.47, which breaks the South Jersey record of 7.53 set by Winslow Township’s Torie Robinson at 2014 Armory Nationals (which is the same meet as Boston Nationals currently is).

Timber Creek junior Ryan Jennings ran 7.53, which tied the former record and now equals No. 2 in South Jersey history and No.

Jones is the 5th-fastest qualifier of over 100 runners and Jennings is 13th-fastest.

Jones’ time is tied for No. 3 in state history and fastest in 13 years, since Paramus Catholic’s Myasia Jacobs ran 7.34 at 2011 Armory Nationals. The only other girl to run faster is Montclair’s Aleah Williams in 1997 at 1997 Boston Nationals at the same Reggie Lewis Center facility that Jones and Jennings raced at Saturday.

Timber Creek becomes only the second school with two girls at 7.60 or faster. Williams’ Montclair teammate Melisa Barber ran 7.50 in 1997.

Results unfortunately don’t show en route times for 55 meters, but Jones would have been well under 7.00 seconds and Jennings should have been under as well.

The semis are scheduled for 4:59 p.m. Saturday. Jennings will be in Lane 2 in the 1st of three semifinal races and Jones is in Lane 5 in the 3rd semi. The top two in each race plus the next-two-fastest times will advance to the final at 2:20 p.m. Sunday across town at the TRACK.

Malachi James easily advances to 60-meter dash semis at New York Nationals!!!!!!

Malachi James ran within 11-100ths of a second of the state record and easily advanced to the semifinals of the 60-meter dash Saturday morning at Armory Nationals in New York.

James, running with a Willingboro affiliation, ran 6.81 and was the 4th-fastest qualifier behind three juniores – Cordial Vann of Heritage high in Frisco, Texas [6.73], Jayden Finley of North Richland Hills, Texas [6.79] and Southern Regional’s Cole Isaac Cramer (6.81). Cramer technically was a faster qualifier than James when their times were compared down to a thousandth of a second – 6.805 to 6.809.

The 30-fastest runners advanced to the semifinals, scheduled for 10:43 a.m. Sunday. The final is scheduled for 12:39 p.m. Sunday.

James is already No. 3 in state history with his 6.71 at the Ocean Breeze Invitational in February. Timber Creek’s Damere Byrd and Franklin Township’s Mario Heslop share the state record of 6.70, Byrd in 2011 and Heslop in 2019.

Washington Township senior Ajani Dwyer, who ran all-time New Jersey No. 4 6.76 at the Millrose Games in February at the Armory, hasn’t raced since because of injuries. He was entered in the 60 at Boston Nationals but did not race in the qualifying heats on Saturday morning at the Reggie Lewis Center in Brighton, Mass.

Dwyer and James are No. 1 and 2 in state history in the 55, Dwyer with 6.18 in the Millrose Trials and James with 6.22 to win the Meet of Champions and break the meet record.

On Saturday, James came through 55 meters in 6.35.

Yashahya Brown runs 4th-fastest 60 hurdles time in state history in trials at Boston Nationals , Alexander Hollimon also one of top qualifiers!!!!!!

Washington Township senior Yashahya Brown didn’t wait for the finals or even the semifinals. Brown PR’d in the 60-meter hurdles  in the qualifying rounds Saturday morning at Boston Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center in Brighton, Mass.

Brown won the 14th of 31 heats (yes, 31 heats) in 7.77, 4th-fastest in state history and 3-100ths of a second faster than his time at Boston Nationals last year.

Brown is 2nd-fastest going into the semifinals, behind Bradley Franklin of Thompson High in Alabaster, Ala., who ran 7.76 in the first heat. Franklin, Brown and Dai’vontay Young of Dunbar High in Dayton, Ohio, who ran 7.78, were the only qualifiers under 7.88.

The top 24 in Saturday’s morning heats advance to the semis, and Brown wasn’t the only Gloucester County hurdler to advance. Williamstown senior Alexander Hollimon, who ran 7.97 to win the seventh heat, was the 11th-fastest qualifier.

That’s No. 10 in South Jersey history and trails only Delsea’s Sultan Tucker and Brown on the all-time Gloucester County list. Hollimon was New Jersey No. 3 this year in the 55 hurdles at 7.36 and placed 3rd in the Meet of Champions.

The semis are scheduled for 5:10 p.m. later Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center with the final at 2:36 p.m. Sunday at The TRACK.

(note that the Williamstown hurdler is listed as “Alexander Hollimom” throughout the entries and results, but I’m pretty sure his last name is actually “Hollimon.” If this is incorrect, can someone from the Williamstown program let me know! Thanks!)
