Timber Creek senior Naylah Jones shattered the South Jersey 60-meter dash record Saturday in qualifying at Boston Nationals.
Jones ran 7.47, which breaks the South Jersey record of 7.53 set by Winslow Township’s Torie Robinson at 2014 Armory Nationals (which is the same meet as Boston Nationals currently is).
Timber Creek junior Ryan Jennings ran 7.53, which tied the former record and now equals No. 2 in South Jersey history and No.
Jones is the 5th-fastest qualifier of over 100 runners and Jennings is 13th-fastest.
Jones’ time is tied for No. 3 in state history and fastest in 13 years, since Paramus Catholic’s Myasia Jacobs ran 7.34 at 2011 Armory Nationals. The only other girl to run faster is Montclair’s Aleah Williams in 1997 at 1997 Boston Nationals at the same Reggie Lewis Center facility that Jones and Jennings raced at Saturday.
Timber Creek becomes only the second school with two girls at 7.60 or faster. Williams’ Montclair teammate Melisa Barber ran 7.50 in 1997.
Results unfortunately don’t show en route times for 55 meters, but Jones would have been well under 7.00 seconds and Jennings should have been under as well.
The semis are scheduled for 4:59 p.m. Saturday. Jennings will be in Lane 2 in the 1st of three semifinal races and Jones is in Lane 5 in the 3rd semi. The top two in each race plus the next-two-fastest times will advance to the final at 2:20 p.m. Sunday across town at the TRACK.
