Yashahya Brown lowered his 60-meter hurdles time to 7.74 Saturday afternoon and advanced to the finals at Boston Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center in Brighton, Mass.
Brown, a Washington Township senior, is still No. 4 in state history and No. 3 in South Jersey history but now only 11-100ths of a second from the state record of 7.63, set by East Orange’s Cory Poole in 2017, and only 1-10th of a second from the South Jersey record of 7.64, set by St. Augustine’s Sincere Rhea in 2019.
Brown had run 7.77 in the qualifying heats earlier Saturday. The final is scheduled for 2:36 p.m. Sunday across town at the TRACK in Boston.
In the semis, Brown won the first of three semifinals to earn a large-Q – an automatic qualifier to the final. The first two finishers in each heat plus the next two-fastest times advanced.
Brown’s time was 3rd-fastest in the semis. Bradley Franklin of Thompson High in Alabaster, Ala., led all qualifiers in 7.66, and Dai’vontay Young of Dunbar High in Dayton, Ohio, ran 7.72.
