Egg Harbor’s Isabella Leak runs 6th-fastest mile in Monmouth history!!!!!!

Isabella Leak, an Egg Harbor Township graduate, ran one of the fastest miles in Monmouth history Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University.

Leak ran 4:53.52, 6th-fastest on the all-time Monmouth list.

There haven’t been a lot of fast women milers from South Jersey lately, and it looks like Leak’s time may actually be fastest by a South Jersey college runner since Haddonfield’s Greta Feldman ran 4:41.62 for Princeton at the 2013 Ivy League Championships in Cambridge, Mass.

Kylie Anicic from Kingsway ran 4:54.93 unpressed and probably could have run faster but focused on the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 at Edinboro. Rider’s Kristin Siegle from Buena ran a 4:22.45 1,500, which is the equivalent of a 4:43.45 mile, but her fastest actual mile was a 4:55.34.

Briana Gess ran 4:51.44 at 2015 Nationals while she was at Haddonfield but never ran a mile during her time at Virginia. Amanda Eller of Millville ran a 4:27.91 for 1,500 meters at Monmouth when she won the 2012 Northeast Conference title but her fastest mile was a 4:58.57.

Anybody else?

In any case, Leak had a high school PR of 5:11.28 from 2020 indoor sectionals, so a 4:53.52 by her junior year of college is one heck of a progression.

Leak races at the CAA Championships are Feb. 22-23 at the Armory.

Austin Gabay runs 2nd-fastest 3,000 by a South Jersey alum, shatters Duke record, Kevin Antczak not far back with a huge PR!!!!!!!!

Austin Gabay ran the 2nd-fastest 3,000 in South Jersey history Saturday in Boston, breaking the Duke school record along the way.

Gabay, a Cinnaminson graduate, ran 7:58.94 at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational, lowering his PR from 8:01.79, which he ran last month on the same track.

The only faster time by a South Jersey runner is a 7:57.65 by Absegami graduate Ford Palmer in New York in January 2017.

He broke the Duke record of 7:59.84 set by Nick Dahl at the 2022 Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

In the same race, Mainland Regional graduate Kevin Antczak, a junior at North Carolina State, ran a big PR of 8:04.87, lowering his PR more than 10 seconds from an 8:12.92 he ran two weeks ago in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Antczak’s time is No. 5 in South Jersey history. North Carolina State doesn’t have an all-time top-10 list or even school records on its web site. It barely has a web site.

Nine of the top 18 times in South Jersey history have been recorded in the last two weeks! That’s incredible!

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time South Jersey alumni 3,000 list. Who’s missing?

Ajani Dwyer, Malachi James set to renew their torrid rivalry on a national stage Sunday at the 116th Millrose Games!!!!!!!!

Ajani Dwyer and Malachi James, two of the four-fastest sprinters in the U.S., will renew their rivalry Sunday at the 116th annual Millrose Games.

Dwyer, a senior at Washington Township, and James, a senior at Burlington City, are entered in a loaded field for the high school boys 60-meter dash, scheduled for 11:14 a.m. at the Armory.

Dwyer is No. 1 in the U.S. at 55 meters with his 6.18 at the Millrose Trials at the Armory last month and James is tied for No. 4 nationally with his 6.31 at the South Jersey Group 1 sectionals on a slower track at the Bubble earlier this month.

Also in the field are U.S. No. 3 Tristan Wright of Franklin County High in Rocky Mount, Va., who ran 6.29 at a meet in Lynchburg, Va., last month, and U.S. co-No. 4 Antwan Hughes of Parkland Magnet in Winston-Salem, N.C., who ran 6.31 this past weekend in Winston-Salem.

Although the Millrose trials are held over the traditional 55-meter high school distance, the race Sunday morning will be over the college and pro 60-meter distance because that’s what the track and timing system are laid out for in a meet like this.

Neither Dwyer or James has ever run an official 60, but Dwyer’s 6.18 converts to a 6.74 for 60 meters and James’ 6.31 converts to 6.88.

Damiere Byrd of Timber Creek and Mario Heslop of Frankin Township share the state record over 60 meters at 6.70, Byrd in 2011 in Seattle and Heslop in 2019 at the Armory.

Despite his accomplishments, Dwyer is still a newcomer to track. He never ran before last spring and only ran a handful of meets. This is his first indoor season. James, the Meet of Champions 100 and 200 winner as a Willingboro sophomore in the spring of 2022, missed most of last year with injuries.

So even though they rank 1st and 7th in state history at 55 meters and attend schools 30 miles apart, Dwyer and James have only raced each other twice – at the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival in late December and at the Millrose Trials. At Ocean Breeze, Dwyer edged James, 6.33 to 6.36. And at Millrose – after qualifying in different heats, Dwyer in 6.27 and James in 6.38 – Dwyer ran that 6.18 in the final, with James 2nd in 6.42.

Dwyer has committed to Penn State, and James signed with Syracuse to play football.

I put together an all-time New Jersey 60-meter dash sub-7 list that’s a lock to be re-written tomorrow:

6.70 … Damiere Byrd [Timber Creek], 2011
6.75 … Fitzroy Ledgister [St. Peter’s Prep], 2022
6.77 … Fabian France [Bergen Catholic], 2022
6.78 … Joe Dawkins [Hackensack], 1995
6.83 … Jamar Ervin [Camden], 2001
6.86 … Maxwell Booker [Essex Catholic], 2001
6.86 … Louis Akpadago [Nottingham], 2020
6.87 … Chris Church [Millville], 2007
6.89 … Mike Fields [Roselle], 1995
6.89 … Mekhi Stafford [Ewing], 2023
6.91 … Samuel Thomas [Northern Burlington], 2023
6.93 … A.J. Bunton [West Deptford], 2006
6.95 … Bruce Black [Hamilton], 2006
6.99 … Brayshul Tuten [Paulsboro], 2021
6.99 … Jack Ahart [Kinnelon], 2023
6.99 … Chris Ross [Walkill Valley], 2023
6.99 … Cole Isaac Cramer [Southern Regional], 2023

Here are some other South Jersey athletes to look for Sunday!

9 a.m. Men’s Distance Medley: Shore Athletic Club has Cherokee graduates Mike Zurzolo and Jack Shea running the 800 and mile legs. Garden State Track Club has Pleasantville graduate Isaac Clarke running the 800.

10:24 a.m. Suburban Girls 4×4: Timber Creek, Winslow Township and Washington Township are all in the six-team field. They rank No. 2, No. 3 and No. 11 in the state this year at 3:53.66, 3:56.86 and 4:03.17.

10:30 a.m. Suburban Boys 4×4: Winslow Townshp will represent South Jersey. Winslow is N.J. #6 at 3:24.64.

11:12 a.m. Girls Triple Jump: Ocean City senior Sophia Curtis is one of nine entrants. Curtis, a Virginia Tech commit, No. 1 is No. 11 nationally this winter at 39-11 but jumped 41-3 ¼ last winter to place 3rd at Boston Nationals. She also won the Meet of Champions outdoors at 40-7 ½.

11:14 a.m. Boys 60-meter dash: James and Dwyer will line up with seven other sprinters from around the country.

11:31 a.m. Girls 300-meter dash: Pennsauken sophomore Sianni Wynn will run in the first of three sections. Wynn ran 39.17 last year, No. 6 in state history.

1:03 p.m. Women’s 60-meter hurdles: Olympic silver medalist and 2016 world champion Nia Ali of Pleasantville is in the nine-woman field. Ali is No. 8 in the world this year with a 7.89 earlier this month in Astana, Kazakhstan, her fastet time in four years. Ali’s lifetime best is 7.80 in Albuquerque in 2014, No. 31 in world history.

1:17 p.m. Women’s 60-meter dash: Olympic gold medalist English Gardner of Eastern is one of eight women lining up for the dash. Gardner hasn’t raced this winter but ran her lifetime best of 7.10 when she won Millrose in 2019.

Wilson’s Dennisha Page PRs again for Tennessee, now 19th-fastest in the world at 60 meters!!!!!!!!

Wilson graduate Dennisha Page ran 60 meters in 7.18 seconds Saturday, the No. 19 time in the world this year.

Page came into the season with a 60 PR of 7.26 from the Tyson Randall Invitational last February in Fayetteville, Ark., as a Rutgers junior. She’s now a senior at Tennessee, and she PR’d two weeks ago with a 7.23 at a meet in College Station, Texas, and lowered it Saturday at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C.

World No. 7 Jacious Sears, Page’s teammate, won the race in 7.13. She ran 7.07 earlier this month and 7.04 last year. Florida State’s Dajaz Defrand and Page both ran 7.18, with Defrand credited for 2nd place with a 7.171 to Page’s 7.174.

Page is now tied for 19th in the world and tied for 8th among U.S. women. Her time is 4th-fastest ever by a New Jersey sprinter, behind Montclair’s Me’Lisa Barber [7.01 in Moscow, Russia, in 2006] Eastern’s English Gardner [7.10 in New York in 2019] and Montclair’s Mikele Barber [7.14 in Albuqurque in 2010].

She’s also tied for 4th-fastest in NCAA Division 1, although it looks like some performances from this weekend haven’t been added to the TFRRS database yet.

Page’s time is No. 4 in Tennessee history behind Searas last year [7.04], Courtney Champion in 2007 [7.15] amd Joella Lloyd [in 2021 [7.15].

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time New Jersey 60-meter dash top-10:

7.01 … Me’Lisa Barber [Montclair], 2006, Moscow, Russia
7.10 … English Gardner [Eastern], 2019, New York
7.14 … Mikele Barber [Montclair], 2010, Albuquerque
7.18 … Dennisha Page [Wilson], 2024, Clemson, S.C.
7.24 … Shavon Greaves [Lakewood], 2010, State College, Pa.
7.24 … Dominique Booker [Montclair Immaculate], 2011, Fayetteville, Ark.
7.24 … Myasia Jacobs [Paramus Catholic], 2016, Boston
7.27 … Torie Robinson [Winslow Twp.], 2017, Clemson, S.C.
7.33 … Aleah Williams [Montclair], 2003, Fayetteville, Ark.
7.33 … Sydney McLaughlin [Union Catholic], 2023, Boston

And here are all the South Jersey sprinters I found at 7.40 or faster. Michelle Glover would be on this list, but she never ran a 60. She did run 6.74 for 55 meters, which would have put her at 7.35 at the same pace for another five meters.

7.10 … English Gardner [Eastern], 2019, New York
7.18 … Dennisha Page [Wilson], 2024, Clemson, S.C.
7.27 … Torie Robinson [Winslow Twp.], 2017, Clemson, S.C.
7.34 … Gabrielle Farquharson [Williamstown], 2016, Geneva, Ohio
7.37 … Amandi Rhett [Moorestown], 2005, Boston

Huge 3,000 PR moves Northern Burlington’s Keira Mansure up to No. 6 spot on all-time Rider performance list!!!!!!

Keira Mansure of Northern Burlington ran a huge 3,000 PR Friday in Boston and moved into the No. 6 spot on the all-time Rider list.

Mansure ran 9:54.48 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational  at Boston University, trimming nearly half a minute off her previous PR of 10:20.91 from a meet in December at the Armory. Mansure is a sophomore at Rider but this is her first year of indoor track, so she’s a freshman eligibility-wise this winter.

Mansure’s 3,200 PR at Northern was 11:37.21, which is the equivalent of a 10:49.38 for 3,000 meters, so she’s improved nearly a minute since arriving in Lawrenceville.

On the Rider all-time list Mansure is now No. 6 but only three seconds out of the No. 2 spot and about 7 ½ seconds off the school record of 9:46.96 set by Emily Ritter of Sussex Tech of Georgetown, Del., at the 2015 Gotham Cup at the Armory.

Cinnaminson’s Malicah Etienne uncorks #3 shot put mark in Georgian Court history in 3rd college meet!!!!!!

Cinnaminson graduate Malicah Etienne, a freshman at Georgian Court, hit a huge shot put PR with the 16-pound ball Friday at the Fastrack National Invitational at Ocean Breeze. It was only his 3rd college meet.

Etienne popped a 53-9 ¼ on his final attempt and placed 2nd to Columbia’s Obiora Okeke, who threw 58-0 ¼.

That’s No. 3 in school history behind current teammate Ryan Roger from Toms River North [54-9 ½ in 2020] and current Georgian Court junior Robbie Babson of Toms River South [54-8 ¼ last year]. It’s the best throw by a Georgian Court freshman.

Etienne’s PR coming into the meet was 50-7 ¼ from a meet last month at the same facility in Staten Island. He surpassed that with a 50-11 on his 3rd attempt before the nearly 3-foot PR on his final attempt, which moved him up from 7th place to 2nd.

That 53-9 ¼ is No. 2 in the East Coast Conference this year behind teammate Robbie Babson, who threw 53-10 ½ last month in a meet in Lancaster, Pa.

Etienne threw 55-11 at the Meet of Champions last spring with the 12-pound shot, so he’s definitely taken to the heavier college implement. He also threw 177-4 in the discus last spring.

Georgian Court coach Mike Murawski was a state high jump champion at Holy Cross and is the Duquesne school record holder in the decathlon [6,140 points] and high jump [6-8 ¼].

Haddonfield girls set South Jersey scoring record in 5th straight sectional title and 12th overall!!!!!!

How dominant were the Haddonfield girls Saturday in the South Jersey Group 2 sectional meet?

Haddonfield had 22 entries, and 19 of them scored. And 12 of the medalists placed first or second. That’s six 1sts, six 2nds, three 3rds, two 4ths and two 6ths.

Haddofield scored a meet-record 136 points and won its record 12th indoor sectional title and 5th in a row, a streak interupted when indoor sectionals weren’t held in 2021. Sterling placed 2nd with 54 points.

Indoor sectionals were first held in 2008, and Haddonfield won Group 1 in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and has now won Group 2 in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

The 136 points are the most ever in any indoor South Jersey sectional or any Group 2 sectional state-wide. Haddonfield set the previous South Jersey standard with 130 1/3 points in Group 1 in 2009. The previous South Jersey Group 2 record was Delsea’s 111 in 2014. The most points previously in any Group 2 meet is Hopewell Valley’s 133 in Central Jersey in 2009. Only Bernards – with 138 points in Central Jersey Group 1 in 2010 – has scored more points in an indoor sectional.

The Bulldogs scored in every event and placed either 1st or 2nd in nine of 10 events. They piled up 68 of a possible 72 in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

And that’s all with the rules changing this year and not allowing schools three entrants in every event.

Senior Ava Thomas won the 1,600 in 5:05.66 and the 3,200 in 11:25.89, junior Audrey Adams PR’d at 8.85 to win the 55-meter hurdles and also was 2nd in the high jump at 4-10, sophomore Riley Austin PR’d at 2:20.01 to win the 800 and was 2nd in the 1,600 in 5:24.80, senior Chloe Kamp won the 55 in a PR 7.36 and was 2nd in the 400 in 1:00.58, and junior Rebecca Hoover cleared 11-9 to win the pole vault.

Senior Anna Stolarick was 2nd in the 800 in 2:20.71 and 3rd in the 1,600 in 5:26.89, junior Nicolette Pinkerton ran a PR 9.26 for 3rd in the hurdles, senior Stella Stolarick PR’d with a 2:21.33 for 4th in the 800, freshman Devon Gervasi ran a PR 11:53.84 in her second high school 3,200 for 2nd place and sophomore Katherine Asher was just behind her in 4th in 11:57.45.

In the field, senior Mia Bompensa cleared 10-6 for the first time indoors or outdoors and placed 3rd in the pole vault, and junior Maeve Hurley cleared 4-8 for 6th place in the high jump.

Stella Stolarick, Anna Stolarick, senior Penny Davis and Adams finished things off with a 2nd-place in the 4-by-4 in 4:13.70, just behind Sterling.

Pemberton sophomore Olivia Serrano won the 400 in 1:00.42, Sterling junior Isabella Patruno matched her PR clearing 5-0 to win the high jump and ran a leg on the winning 4-by-4 team, and Eastside senior Yamilet Basarte-Cruz – in her first season of indoor track – threw 37-5 ¾ to win the shot put.

Sterling senior Ayanna Brown, junior Leeya Joseph, Patruno and junior Elyse Simpson ran 4:13.00 to win the relay.

Matthew Littlehales, throwers and vaulters lead Delsea to 7th indoor sectional title!!!!!!

Sophomore Matthew Littlehales placed 2nd in the 3,200 and 4th in the 1,600 and scored 12 points for Delsea as the Crusaders won their 7th indoor sectional title Friday at the Bubble.

Littlehales ran 9:40.15 in the 3,200 and 4:29.81 in the 1,600, and Delsea outscored Winslow Township 56-42 to win the South Jersey Group 3 championship. Highland [35], Hammonton [32 ½], Timber Creek [28] and Ocean City [26] made it six school in a 30-point range.

Delsea won South Jersey Group 2 sectional titles in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2018 and 2020. This was the Crusaders’ 1st Group 3 crown.

State-wide, only Rahwah and Willingboro – with eight each – have won more sectional championships than Delsea since the inception of the indoor sectional meets in 2008. Matawan, Morris Hills and Haddonfield have also won seven. Haddonfield won its 7th on Friday.

Delsea scored 35 of its 56 points in the three field events.

Delsea picked up 15 points in the shot put, with junior Jonathan Harris winning with a meet-record 58-1 ¾ throw, senior Greg Masso taking 4th in 50-8 ½ and senior Tyler Habersham-Agbemenu picking up a point in 6th place with a 49-6. Harris smashed the meet record of 57-3 1/2 set in 2016 by Toms River East’s Dan Gilligan.

And in the pole vault, Delsea added 16 points, with senior Carlos Reyes and sophomore Mason Murray both clearing 12-6 for 2nd and 3rd and junior Henry Cifaloglio matching his PR 12-0 for 5th place.

Senior Julian Conigliaro placed 3rd in the 55-meter dash in 6.65 and senior Wayne Adair cleared 5-10 and tied for 4th in the high jump

Sophomore Quincy Matthews lowered his PR from 8.23 to 8.13 and placed 5th in the 55-meter hurdles for two big points.

Delsea also got a point in the 4-by-4, with Xavier Wyatt, Conigliaro, Quincy Matthews and Christian Langston taking 6th in 3:37.07.

Other winners were Hammonton senior Aaron Mull in a photo finish in the 55 with Pennsauken senior Elijah Jennings, who both ran 6.51, Winslow junior Jayden Poteat in the 400 [51.56], Winslow junior Dominic Bassey in the 800 [1:59.47], Highland junior distance runners Cortland Webb in the 1,600 [4:25.04] and Mason Wassell in the 3,200 [PR 9:36.61], Clearview senior Daniel Couse in the pole vault [13-6], Highland junior Jayden De Leon in the high jump [6-2].

Winslow’s 4-by-4, with junior Chukwuemeka Ajaegbulemh, Bassey, Poteat and senior Darrell Jackson Jr., who ran 3:27.70.

With 43 points in two events, Timber Creek girls roll to 2nd straight sectional title!!!!!!

Senior Guerlande Pierre ran the fastest hurdles time by a South Jersey girl this year, leading a 1-2-3 sweep as Timber Creek roared to its third indoor sectional title and second in a row.

Pierre ran a lifetime-best 8.31 over the 55-meter highs, senior Nyla Jones was 2nd with a PR 8.49 and junior Billie Frazier took 3rd in a PR of her own at 8.53.

That’s 24 points in one event for the Chargers, who sprinted to an 70-52 win over Mainland Regional to win the South Jersey Group 3 title at the Bubble.

Pierre’s previous PR was 8.34 earlier this week at Ocean Breeze, Jones’ was 8.54 earlier this month at Ocean Breeze and Frazier’s was 8.56 last month at the Bubble.

That trio of Timber Creek hurdlers is now No. 1, No. 6 and No. 7 in South Jersey. Pierre’s 8.31 is 6th-fastest this year in New Jersey.

The versatile Pierre, a future heptathlete no doubt, also placed 3rd in the high jump at 5-2 and took 4th in the shot put with a 37-1 ½.

We’ll have more on the ridiculously fast 55-meter dash tomorrow, but it was a doozy – Timber Creek went 1-2 with junior Ryan Jennings edging senior teammate and New Jersey No. 1 Naylah Jones, with both timed in 7.00 and going under the previous meet record of 7.06, set last year by Pennsauken’s Sianni Wynn, who was 3rd in 7.07. Chloe Jones ran 7.47 and placed 6th.

Jennings, Naylah Jones, Chloe Jones and Frazier finished off the evening with a record-setting win in the 1,600-meter relay. Timber Creek’s 3:57.25 broke the meet record of 3:58.18 set by Winslow’s Iyianna Williams, Flora Ahiarakwe, Janeya Hammond and Shakira Dancy. Winslow also dipped under four minutes with a 3:58.35.

Jennings and Chloe Jones went 3-6 in the 400 for Timber Creek, Jennings in 58.05 and Jones in 59.73.

Burlington Twp.’s Payton Falkenstein off to a flying start for East Stroudsburg!!!!!!

Payton Falkenstein, an East Stroudsburg freshman from Burlington Township, is off to a fast start with one of the school’s fastest times in the last decade in her first lifetime track 5,000.

Falkenstein ran 18:22.72 at the Riverhawk Invitational in Boston. Freshman teammate Brianna Hennett, an NCAA Division 2 XC qualifier this past fall, ran 17:45.96 in the same race.

Those are East Stroudsburg’s two fastest indoor 5,000 times since 2014, when Kim Wernerspach ran 18:05.85 at the Armory, and they’re the two-fastest freshman 5,000 times on record since 2011, which is as far back as the Track and Field Results Reporting System [TFRRS] web site goes.

Falkenstein didn’t run any track 5,000s in high school, but her 3,200 PR was 11:54.28, which is an average of 5:57 per mile, and her 5,000 averaged 5:55 per mile. So she ran faster for 25 laps indoors in her college 5,000 debut than eight laps outdoors.

Falkenstein ranks 10th in the PSAC in the 5,000 and 4th among freshmen.
