Penn State’s Luciano Pizarro from Cherokee bombs first lifetime indoor 60-foot shot put throw at Big Ten Championships!!!!!!

Cherokee’s Luciano Pizarro surpassed 60 feet for the first time indoors during the shot put competition at the Big Ten Conference Championships Saturday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Pizarro, a Penn State junior, only had two legal throws, but hit 60-8 ½ on his 5th throw. He threw 58-11 ½ on his first.

Pizarro’s previous indoor PR was a 59-10 ¼ just last weekend in a home meet in State College. Before that it was 59-9 ½ from a home meet last month. His indoor PR coming into the season was 57-10 ¼ at last year’s Big Ten meet in Geneva, Ohio. So his top three indoor meets have been his last three meets, and he’s thrown at least 58-4 ¾ in all five meets this winter.

Outdoors, Pizarro threw 65-0 ¾ at the 2023 Big Ten meet in Bloomington, Ind. That’s 4th-best ever by a South Jersey high school alum behind World Championship medalist Josh Awotunde of Delsea [73-1 ½], Bridgeton’s Braheme Days Jr. of Bridgeton [66-3 ½] and Paulsboro’s Jon Kalnas [66-2 ¾].

Unfortunately, Penn State does not have an all-time top-10- in its record book. They do have a top-5 that I updated as far back as I could, which is 2010. So this makeshift all-time list might be missing a few names, but it’s the best I could do:

67-3 ½ … Darrell Hill, 2015
65-7 … C.J. Hunter, 1990
65-1 ¼ … Joe Kovacs, 2011
62-6 ½ … Phil Caraher, 1991
62-1 ¼ … Blake Eaton, 2011
61-0 … Jon Yohman, 2017
61-7 … Logan Caldwell, 2012
60-9 ¼ … Ben Peterson, 2020
60-8 ½ … Luciano Pizarro, 2024

Princeton’s Greg Foster from Lumberton pulls out 3rd Ivy League long jump title with clutch late jump!!!!!!

Greg Foster, sitting in 3rd place going into his 5th jump, sailed 25-2 to win his 3rd straight Ivy League long jump championship at Harvard’s Gordon Indoor Track in Cambridge, Mass.

Foster, a Lumberton native who graduated from Lawrenceville Prep, had a best jump of 24-9 ¼ through four rounds and trailed Brown’s John McNeil, who had PR’d with a 25-1 ¾, and Brown’s Zachary Love, who had jumped 24-11.

But Foster, who has been dealing with injuries and sickness, went a quarter of an inch farther than McNeil to move into the lead. Love fouled on his final attempt, but McNeil hit 24-8 ½, coming up just a few inches short of overtaking Foster.

Foster won the Ivy indoors as a freshman in Hanover, N.H., at 25-9 ½ and last spring with a a 26-1 ¾.

Foster placed 8th in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.22 on Sunday afternoon.

Later Sunday, Foster will compete in the triple jump starting at 2:30 p.m. He’s the No. 5 seed with a season-best 49-1.

Foster has an indoor triple jump PR of 50-7 ½ from last year’s indoor Ivy League meet, where he placed 2nd. He hit his lifetime-best 51-0 ½ as a high school senior outdoors at the West Philly Nationals in June 2022.

Another interesting note from the Ivy League meet: Princeton sophomore Tessa Mudd, who won the pole vault at 14-4 ¾, a meet record, Ivy League record and No. 13 mark in NCAA Division 1, is coached by former Seneca pole vaulter Mike Maira.

Eastern’s Theresa Albertson, Samantha Osei-Kyei, Annelise Shack, Natalie Dumas win Ocean Breeze Elite 4×8 with fastest S.J. time this year!!!!!!

Osei-Kyei gave Eastern the lead for good with a 2:20.81 split, and Dumas turned a close lead at the final handoff in to a big win in 9:34.14. Shenendehowa High of Clifton Park, N.Y., was 2nd in 9:39.15.

Albertson led off with a 2:27.09 split, and Shack ran 2:29.75 to set up Dumas’s anchor leg.

Eastern broke it’s school-record 9:42.66 set two weeks ago, also at Ocean Breeze. The Vikings’ time is No. 6 in Camden County history.

Dumas [56.72] and Osei-Kyei [57.47] also PR’d in the open 400. Those times are No. 2 and 5 in South Jersey this year and Dumas’s 56.72 is No. 8 in Camden County history and 6th-fastest in New Jersey this year. The full all-time Camden County sub-58 list is below.

Rider’s Mariah Stephens of Egg Harbor Township opens MAAC Championships with her 8th lifetime conference title, top qualifier in two more events!!!!!!!!

Rider junior Mariah Stephens of Egg Harbor Township had a monster Day 1 of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet Saturday at the Armory.

Stephens won one event and posted the top qualifying time in two other events, recorded two PRs recorded the 2nd-best mark in school history in three events.

Stephens won the long jump with her first lifetime 19-foot jump, her seventh lifetime MAAC individual first place. She entered competition with an 18-10 ¾ PR from two weeks ago at Ocean Breeze but hit 19-1 ¼ on her first jump and backed that up with an 18-9 ¼ on her final attempt to win by nearly nine inches.

Her 19-1 ¼ is No. 2 in school history behind a 19-8 ¾ by Holy Spirit graduate Asia Young on her final jump at the 2017 MAAC Championships, also at the Armory. Her outdoor PR is an 18-8 ¼ at last year’s outdoor MAAC meet in Emmitsburg, Md.

Stephens has now won 19 total medals in MAAC Conference meet competition with three more events to come on Sunday.

Stephens on Saturday also posted the No. 1 qualifying marks in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.

In the dash trials, she ran a lifetime-best 7.62, lowering her PR from 7.65 from last year’s MAAC meet at the Armory. She’s 2nd in school history to Pemberton graduate Tierra Taylor, who ran 7.57 at that same 2017 MAAC Championships where Young long jumped 19-8 ¾. The only other qualifier under 7.70 was Quinnipiac sophomore Nyasia Dailey, who ran 7.67.

And in the hurdles trials, she ran a season-best 8.61 to lead all qualifiers into the final. The only other woman under 8.90 was teammate Raisa Thunig from Toms River East, who ran 8.78. Stephens’ hurdles PR is an 8.57 from the trials in last year’s MAAC meet. School record is 8.41 set when she won the 2019 MAAC Championships at the Armory. Those are the top-two marks in school history.

Stephens at some point on Sunday will race in the 60 and 60 hurdles finals and triple jump.

If there’s a time schedule for the meet anywhere on the MAAC website or in the “digital program” they posted I can’t find it. There is an order of events on the 2023 meet page and it shows the hurdles final at 5:20 p.m., the dash 15 minutes later and the triple jump at 6:15 p.m. But who knows if this year’s schedule is the same. Note to MAAC sports info department: Time schedule. Post one.

Here’s a look at Stephens’ eight total conference titles so far:

2022 indoor [4 total medals]
Long Jump [18-5 ¾]
Triple Jump [38-5 ½]
2022 outdoors [5 total medals]
Triple Jump [39-5 ¼]
400-Meter Relay [47.26]
2023 indoors [4 medals]
60-Meter Hurdles [8.59]
Triple Jump [38-4 ¼]
2023 outdoors [5 medals]
Triple Jump [39-0 ½]
2024 indoors [1 medal]
Long Jump [19-1 ¼]

Malachi James runs within 1-100th of a second of New Jersey 60-meter dash record at Ocean Breeze!!!!!!

Burlington City senior Malachi James ran within 1-100th of a second of the state record in the 60-meter dash Saturday at Ocean Breeze.

James ran away from a loaded field at the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational, decisively beating some of the top sprinters from New York, New Jersey and Delaware.

James ran 6.71, just off the state record of 6.70 set by Timber Creek’s Damiere Byrd at the 2011 Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle and matched by Franklin’s Mario Heslop at 2019 Armory Nationals.

James’ previous 60 PR was his 6.78 at the Millrose Games at the Armory earlier this month. Washington Township’s Ajani Dwyer ran 6.76 in that race, and their times ranked 3rd and 5th in state history. But now James has bumped Dwyer down to 4th.  Dwyer has missed the last couple weeks with an injury.

James won by two full meters over 2nd-place Andrew Jeremiah Boakye, a junior at Bergen Catholic in Oradell. Boakye ran 6.90.

Although the results don’t list en-route times through 55 meters, a 6.71 for 60 meters converts to 6.25 for 55 meters. James’ 55 PR is 6.30 from his win at the state Group 1 meet last weekend. That’s tied for No. 4 in state history. He’ll run 55 meters next Saturday in the Meet of Champions at Ocean Breeze, where he’s the top seed. The state record James is chasing is Dwyer’s 6.18 from the Millrose Trials at the Armory in January. That’s No. 9 in U.S. scholastic history. He’ll get another shot at the 60 at whichever Nationals meet he chooses.

With his 6.71, James is now No. 4 in the U.S. at 60 meters, according to the MileSplit national database. Jelani Watkins of Klein Forest High in Houston, who edged Dwyer and James at Millrose, is No. 3 at 6.68.

According to the World Athletics database, James’ 6.71 is tied for 17th on the world Under-20 list.

Here’s my best attempt at an all-time New Jersey 60-meter dash list:

6.53 … Dennis Mitchell [Edgewood], Stuttgart, Germany, 1994

PAUL VI’S SHAELAN MCNALLY RUNS 3RD-FASTEST 800 IN SOUTH JERSEY HISTORY AT OCEAN BREEZE!!!!!!!!

Paul VI senior Shaelan McNally ran the 3rd-fastest indoor 800 in South Jersey history and fastest in 14 years Saturday at Ocean Breeze, dropping more than seven seconds from her lifetime-best.

Racing at the Ocean Breeze Elite in Staten Island, N.Y., McNally ran 2:11.85 and placed 6th overall in a race that produced six of the 17-fastest times in the U.S. this year.

And that’s incredible is that McNally did it out of an unseeded heat.

The only South Jersey girls to run faster than McNally indoors are Washington Township’s Megan Tiernan, who placed 2nd at 2010 Armory Nationals in 2:09.56; and Olympian Erin Donohue of Haddonfield, who ran a hand-timed 2:10.0 at the 2001 Varsity Classic, also at the Armory.

Rumson-Fair Haven junior Clemmie Lilley won in 2:09.36 – No. 8 in New Jersey history. Lilley is a 400-800 runner and hasn’t run a mile this year.

McNally had only run one 800 in the last year – an outdoor 2:20.48 in the Olympic Conference meet last May at Rancocas Valley. In her only previous indoor 800, she ran 2:31.52 to win a meet at the Bubble last February. So technically, she PR’d by nearly 20 seconds Saturday.

McNally has run 4:57.06 this winter, and she and Donohue are now the only South Jersey girls to run sub-2:12 and sub-5.

Her time is fastest by a South Jersey girl indoors or outdoors since Lenape’s Shelby Whetstone ran 2:10.55 to win the 2019 state Group 4 race at Franklin.

Eleven girls ran faster than 2:17 in the first section, but McNally did have some competition in the second section of the race.

And when Maggie McCabe of Notre Dame High in Manhattan and Rosemary Shay of Middletown South both went out fast – 31.56 and 65.02 for McNabe and 31.79 and 65.34 for Shay – McNally was able to let them set the pace and do the early work and then take off the last 400.

McNally was out in 32.06 and 65.90 and then took the lead on the third lap, closing in 65.96 for her final 400 and 32.50 for her final 200.

She bumped all but the five-fastest girls in the fast heat to earn 6th-place overall. McCabe ran 2:13.43 for 7th and Shay 2:14.63 for 9th.

McNally broke the school record by more than nine seconds. Abigail Lutz ran 2:20.88 at the 2020 Parochial A meet at the Bubble.

McNally will race the 1,600 at the Meet of Champions next Saturday at Ocean Breeze. She’s the No. 4 seed with her 4:57.06

Woodbury’s Brady Shute smashes Cornell 1,000 record in qualifying rounds at Ivy League Championships!!!!!!

Woodbury graduater Brady Shute smashed Cornell’s 1,000-meter run record Saturday in the qualifying rounds at the Ivy League Championshps.

Shute ran 2:23.51 in the 2nd of three semifinal races at Harvard’s Gordon Indoor Track in Cambridge, Mass. He broke the school record of 2:23.66 set by Nick Wade at the 2011 Nittany Lion Challenge in State College, Pa.

That’s the fastest time by a South Jerey alum in 15 years, since Rob Novak – a graduate of Westampton Tech who competed for Bordentown – ran 2:22.53 at the Armory on Feb. 22, 2009. That’s the South Jersey alumni record.

Shute had a previous PR over 1,000 meters of 2:25.44 from the 2022 Ivy League Championships at the Armory in New York. Cornell’s fastest previous South Jersey runner in the 1,000 was Mainland Regional’s Jimmy Wyner, who ran 2:24.58 at the Armory in 2006.

Shute had the 2nd-fastest time among the eight qualifiers – nine will go to the final as the result of a Dartmouth protest – and he was an auto qualifier by virtue of a top-2 finish in one of the three semis.

He ran his 200s in 27.31, 28.99, 29.64, 29.06 and 28.52 for a final 400 of 57.58. Shute’s pace at 2:23.51 for 1,000 meters is 1:54.81 for 800 meters.

The final is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Sunday.

Highland’s Floyd Whitaker of Oklahoma pops best indoor triple jump ever by a South Jersey native at Big 12 Championships!!!!!!!!

Highland’s Floyd Whitaker, a sophomore at Oklahoma, recorded the best indoor triple jump ever by a South Jersey native Saturday and placed 3rd in the Big 12 Conference Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

Whitaker soared 52-3 ¼ on his 3rd jump, the best indoor jump ever by a South Jersey athlete. The previous South Jersey alumni best indoors was Whitaker’s 51-5 ½ in January of 2022 in a meet in Minneapolis competing unattatched because his previous college – the Univeristy of Minnesota – doesn’t have an indoor track program.

Whitaker has an outdoor PR of 52-6 ¼ from World Juniors in Cali, Columbia, in August of 2022. That’s the No. 2 jump ever by a South Jersey alum, behind a 53-6 ½ by Greg Foster of Shawnee in Flagstaff in May 1988. Foster’s son Greg currently competes for Princeton and won the Ivy League long jump in Cambridge, Mass., while Whitaker was triple jumping in Texas.

After opening with a 49-10 ½ and a foul, Whitaker had three straight jumps over 50 feet – 52-3 ¼, 50-11 ½ and 51-7. This was only his fourth meet for Oklahoma. He jumped 51-3 ½ last month in another meet in Lubbock, so he recorded his two-best jumps as a Sooner Saturday.

Whitaker jumped 50-2 ½ at Highland when he won the 2019 Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington.

Cherry Hill East’s Maya Drayton of Georgetown wins 200 at Big East Championships!!!!!!

Maya Drayton won her 3rd conference title Saturday with a season-best time in the 200 at the Big East Championships in Chicago.

Drayton, a Georgetown grad student, ran 24.18 to win the 200 over freshman teammate Abbie Huey, who placed 2nd in 24.32. She also placed 2nd in the 400 in 55.06 at the Worrill Track and Field Center

Drayton, a Cherry Hill East graduate, won the Big East 400 title last winter in Chicago in 54.44 and was on Georgetown’s winning 4-by-4 outdoors last spring at Villanova.

On the all-time Georgetown list, Drayton is No. 4 in the 200 with her PR of 24.11 as well as No. 2 in the 300 [38.34], No. 7 in the 400 [54.55] and No. 5 in the 60 [7.60].

Egg Harbor’s Isabella Leak moves into #6 spot on all-time Monmouth mile list with 5th-place finish at CAA Championships!!!!!!

Egg Harbor Township graduate Isabella Leak, a junior at Monmouth, ran her second mile PR this month Friday and placed 5th at the Coastal Athletic Assocation Championships at the Armory.

Leak ran 4:53.23, No. 6 in Monmouth history, trimming her mile PR from 4:53.52 at a meet two weeks ago in Boston.

Leak easily advanced to the final with a 5:00.10 in Thursday’s qualifying round. In the final, she closed in 69.33 for her final 400 meters.
