Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo, Wilson’s Dennisha Page, Winslow’s Tionna Tobias among qualifiers for NCAA Championships!!!!!!!!

Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo, Wilson’s Dennisha Page and Winslow Township’s Tionna Tobias will all be headed to the NCAA Division 1 track championships next weekend in Boston.

Garozzo, a junior at Penn, is scheduled to anchor the Quakers’ 1,600-meter relay team, which is the No. 8 seed with its school-record 3:29.86. Penn ran that time at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 9.

The first three legs for Penn are sophomore Christiana Nwachuku of Kent Place High in Summit, junior Jocelyn Niemiec of Arnold O. Beckman High in Tustin, Calif., and sophomore Isabella Whittaker of Mount DeSales Academy in Laurel, Md.

Penn has never placed in the 1,600-meter relay at NCAA Division 1 nationals. The Quakers earned All-America honors outdoors in 2019 when they placed 17th in 3:36.8 in Austin.

Garozzo ran 8.29 in the 60-meter hurdles last week at the Ivy League Championsions in Cambridge, Mass., to tie Penn’s school record. She ran a 52.47 anchor leg when Penn ran 3:29.86 earlier this month.

Page was one of 16 qualifiers in the 60-meter dash, thanks to her PR 7.18 in the prelims at the same meet at Clemson. That’s No. 4 in Clemson history and 4th-fastest ever by a New Jersey woman. She’s also seeded 8th.

Page also ran 23.13 at Clemson but missed the qualifying cutoff by 15-100ths of a second. She’s ranked 30th in the world and 11th among U.S. women in the 60 and 38th in the world in the 200 and 24th among U.S. women.

Tobias qualified by long jumping a lifetime-best 21-0 1/2 at a meet in Albuquerque in early February. She competed at NCAAs last spring in Bloomington, Ind., in the heptathlon after winning the Big Ten title with 5,640 points. It was at NCAAs last spring where she set her previous long jump PR of 20-9 1/4.

Tobias this winter ran 8.18 in the 60-meter hurdles but missed qualifying for NCAAs by 4-100ths of a second. She scored 4,049 points in a January pentathlon in Iowa City and missed the NCAA cutoff by 83 points.

This will be both Garozzo and Page’s first trip to NCAAs. Page did run the 100 and 200 at NCAA outdoor East Prelims last spring as a junior at Rutgers but did not make it to the championships in Austin.

The NCAA indoor championships are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday next week at the TRACK in Boston.

Page races in the women’s 60-meter dash semifinals at 7:18 p.m. next Friday, March 8, with the final scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9. The 4-by-4 is a final only, scheduled for 8:20 p.m. on Saturday to close out the meet. Tobias jumps at 7 p.m. Friday

Live results will be here starting next Thursday.

A look at all 120 boys indoor Meet of Champions winners from South Jersey!!!!!!

On Wednesday, we posted every Meet of Champions girls winner since the inception of the girls meet in 1979. You can find that list here. The boys meet started 10 years earlier in 1969, so this list is a little longer.

South Jersey didn’t have any winners in the inaugural meet in 1969 but in 1970 Camden hurdler Jim Robinson ran 7.3 to win the 60-yard hurdles and become the first.

Over the last 50 years, the only times South Jersey boys didn’t record a Meet of Champions win were 1982 and 2007. So from 1983 through 2006, that was 24 straight years with a South Jersey win. And this year will be 16 years in a row.

Here’s a look at your boys indoor Meet of Champions winners … all 120 of them!

A look at every South Jersey girl that’s ever won an indoor Meet of Champions title!!!!!!

Hard to believe but when the girls Meet of Champions state in 1979 – 10 years after the boys meet – it was held at Elizabeth High School on what was essentially a gym floor. The “track” was 12 laps to the mile, so about 147 yards per lap.

By 1980, the girls had joined the boys at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym. Both meets moved to the Jersey City Armory in 2006, before the Bubble was ready, and they were at the Bubble in Toms River from 2007 through 2017 and again in 2019 and 2022. In 2018, 2020 and 2023, they meets finally moved to a facility worthy of the meet – Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. (There was no MoC in 2021.)

This year’s meets – the 54th annual for the boys and 44th annual for the girls – return to Ocean Breeze starting at 10 a.m. All events  not introduced in 1979 are listed with their first year at the meet.

Here’s a look at every South Jersey winner ever in the history of the girls meet. I’ll post the boys list tomorrow. Anybody missing? Drop me a note in the comment section.

(Because the lame NJSIAA program is riddled with so many errors, typos, mis-spellings and omissions, several winners of the girls 3,200 were missing. They should all be correct now.)

Triple jump trio Sophia Curtis, Ma’Syiah Brawner, Lauren Fadairo lead S.J. contingent in Meet of Champions showcase events; full list here!!!!!!

Ocean City senior Sophia Curtis, Winslow Township sophomore Ma’Syiah Brawner and Rancocas Valley senior Lauren Fadairo – the top three seeds in the triple jump – lead 59 South Jersey entries in the four “showcase” events Sunday at the Meet of Champions.

The showcase events aren’t contested at sectionals or states so instead of advancing to the Meet of Champions the competitors are selected based on their performances during the season.

And Curtis, Brawner and Fadairo are the top three triple jumpers in New Jersey this winter.

Curtis, a state champion last spring in the 400, 400-meter hurdles and triple jump, has a PR of 40-10 ¼ from the Penn Relays last spring. Her best jump so far this year is a 39-11 back in December at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic at the Armory. She’s been over 39 feet in three of her four meets. She’s only lost to a New Jersey triple jumper once since transsferring over from Padua Academy in Wilmington, Del., after her sophomore year. That was in last year’s indoor Meet of Champions, where she was 2nd to Union Catholic’s Alexandra Bonn.

Brawner set an indoor PR last month with a 39-3 at the Armory Officials Hall of Fame Invitational. Last spring, she jumped 39-10 ¼, a state freshman record. Her only loss this year came to Mekiyah Earnest of Padua Academy, Curtis’s former teammate.

Fadairo PR’d last week with her 38-1 ½ to win Easterns at the Armory. Like Brawner, she qualified for M-o-C in the long jump as well. Brawner is the No. 1 seed at 19-3 ½.

Curtis, Brawner and Fadairo rank No. 1, 3 and 5 in South Jersey history indoors. They’re ranked 14th, 23rd and 63rd nationally this winter, according to the MileSplit national database. All three own their current county record – Curtis in Cape May County, Brawner in Camden County, Fadairo in Burlington County.

Other top-5 seeds from South Jersey in the showcase events Sunday: Malachi James and Julian Conigliaro in the 200, Cherokee in the 4-by-8, Rece Englehart of Moorestown in the long jump and Glassboro’s Cartrell Moore in the triple jump. On the girls side, Sianni Wynn of Pennsauken and Timber Creek’s Naylah Jones and Ryan Jennings are the top three seeds in the 200 and Brawner is top seed in the long jump.

Strong finish in 800 earns Purdue’s Bryanna Craig from Millville 2nd place in Big Ten pentathlon!!!!!!

Millville’s Bryanna Craig came within 18 points of winning her first Big 10 title Saturday but finished a strong 2nd with 3,992 points at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Craig, a sophomore at Purdue, placed 2nd behind Penn State senior Chloe Royce, who won with 4,010 points. She was in 5th going into the 800, the final event, but ran 2:15.97 for 879 points and passed three women to move into 2nd and nearly catch Royce.

Craig was also 2nd last winter, finishing 63 points behind Indiana senior Hope Purcell with her PR 4,046 points. She was also 2nd last spring with a personal-best 5,640 points in the heptathlon behind Winslow Township’s Tionna Tobias of Iowa.

On Saturday, Craig ran 8.71 for 971 points in the hurdles, high jumped 5-5 ¾ for 818 points, threw the shot a lifetime-best 37-11 ½ for 633 points and long jumped 17-11 ½ for 691 points before the closing 800.

Her hurdles time was 1-100th of a second off her PR of 8.70, set last winter in a meet in Chicago. It was her fastest hurdles time ever in a multi. Her other PRs are 5-8 ¾, 18-7 ¼ and 2:12.34.

Craig is only 135 points from the Purdue school record of 4,181 points set by Corissa Yasen in 1996. Her 4,046-point PR is Purdue’s highest in 26 years. Outdoors, her 5,640-point score is 4th-highest in Purdue history and highest in 28 years.

On the latest World Athletics site, Craig is listed as 40th among U.S. women with 3,792 points from a meet in January in Louisville. For some reason, World Athletics doesn’t update its database as often (or as accurately) as it used to, but her 3,992 should be somewhere among the top 25 U.S. women.

She’s ranked 33rd in NCAA Division 1.

Tobias led the pentathlon through four events before disaster struck in the 800 and she was unable to finish.

But she had some strong early marks, including a PR 36-2 ¾ in the shot put, a 19-9 long jump and an 8.20 hurdles time – her fastest ever in a multi.

Incredibly, the NCAA web site explaining “how the championship field is selected,” never actually says how the championship field is selected. How many athletes qualify in each event? That doesn’t seem to be written anywhere, but I’ll keep looking. But typical track and field where the people in charge just make it as hard as possible to follow the sport.

In any case, Tobias ranks among the top 30 in the pentathlon [24th], hurdles [27th] and long jump [15th at 20-0 ½]. Craig is 33rd in the pentathlon.

Haddonfield’s Zachariah Murray lowers his own Marquette 400-meter school record in 2nd-place finish at Big East!!!!!!

Zachariah Murray is a tremendous story of persistence and determination. The kind of story all track and field fans love. Because of that, he was able to break a 4-year-old PR on Saturday.

Murray, a Haddonfield graduate and now a 5th-year grad student at Marquette, placed 2nd Saturday in the 400-meter dash at the Big East Championships in Chicago.

After barely reaching the final.

Murray ran 47.97 in the final, toppling his PR of 47.98 by 1-100th of a second. Murray ran 47.98 as a freshman in the 2020 indoor Big East Championships in Geneva, Ohio, and that stood as his 400 PR until this past weekend.

In the trials on Friday, Murray ran 48.84, the 7th-fastest qualifying time, and he only advanced by 24-100ths of a second. He wound up in Lane 3 for the two-race final but when the winning time in the first section was 48.46 and he was able to finish in front of everyone but UConn’s Anish Rajamanickam in the second section, he had a 2nd-place medal. Rajamanickam won the race in 47.91.

Murray came close to running sub-48 a bunch of times – he ran 48.14 and 48.12 at the 2022 Big East outdoors in Storrs, 48.24 last winter at the Big East meet in Chicago and then 48.30 at last year’s outdoor Big East at Villanova.

Before Murray ran 47.98, Marquette’s indoor school record was 48.30, run by Kyle Winter in a meet in South Bend, Ind., in March 2012. So he actually lowered his own school record this weekend.

(And great job by Marquette sports information updating the all-time list already!)

That 48.12 from 2022 Big East is Murray’s outdoor PR and No. 6 in school history. Because of COVID, there was no 2020 outdoor season, so 2021 was Murray’s freshman year of outdoor eligibility, which means he should be eligible for outdoors this year if he decides to compete. If he does, he’ll be chasing the outdoor school record of 47.13 set by John Rydeski at the 1981 Central Collegiate Championships in East Lansing, Mich.

SHELBY WHETSTONE FROM LENAPE RUNS FASTEST 600 EVER BY SOUTH JERSEY WOMAN, FASTEST RUTGERS TIME IN 44 YEARS!!!!!!!!

Incredible race for Lenape graduate Shelby Whetstone Saturday, placing 4th in the Big Ten Conference Championships at 600 meters and just missing a 44-year-old Rutgers record.

Whetstone, a Rutgers senior, went into the weekend with a 600 PR of 1:32.17 from earlier this month, but she ran 1:29.79 in the qualifying rounds Friday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, and 1:29.93 in the final on Saturday.

That 1:29.79 is fastest ever by a South Jersey woman over 600 meters.

That’s the fastest time by a Rutgers woman since Denise Peynado from Thomas Jefferson High in Brooklyn ran 1:29.53 at the 1980 AIAW Championships in Columbia, Md., a school record that has stood for 44 years.

Obviously, the 600 isn’t contested as often as the 400 or 800, but it is run fairly often in college and open indoors meets in the U.S., and Whetstone’s time will land her in the top 100 all-time U.S. once this weekend’s meets are updated in the World Athletics database.

It’s fastest ever by a South Jersey woman, breaking a record set by Nijgia Snapp of Oakcrest, who ran 1:30.48 in a meet at Penn State while running for Tennessee in 2010.

And it’s 7th-fastest ever by a New Jersey woman, and some of the women ahead of her on that list are fairly well known. Including a World record holder, an indoor World Champion, a three-time Olympian and a U.S. nationals silver medalist. Victoria Vanriele, a Penn State junior, is ahead of Whetstone on that all-time list but finished just behind her on Saturday.

DOWN TO HER LAST TRIPLE JUMP ATTEMPT, EGG HARBOR TWP.’S MARIAH STEPHENS SMASHES RIDER SCHOOL RECORD, WINS MAAC CONFERENCE TITLE!!!!!!

Down to her last triple jump and without a legal mark, all Mariah Stephens did with her final chance to qualify for the finals was shatter the Rider school record on her way to her 3rd win of the weekend Sunday at the MAAC Championships at the Armory.

Stephens, who had already won the long jump on Saturday and 60-meter hurdles on Sunday and placed 2nd in the 60-meter dash, fouled on her first two attempts in the triple jump and went into her 3rd attempt needing to get a legal mark just to have a chance to advance to the finals.

But not only did she get a legal mark, she set an indoor PR of 39-8 ¾, broke a 7-year-old school record and moved into the lead on her way to her 3rd win of the weekend.

That jump smashed her indoor best of 39-4 ½ from a meet at the Armory in December and was only 1 ¼ inches off her overall PR of 39-10 from an outdoor meet last April in Lawrenceville.

It broke the school record of 38-11 ¾ set by Destiny Kearney from Toms River South at the 2017 MAAC Championships at the Armory.

Earlier Sunday, Stephens won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.64 and placed 2nd in the 60-meter dash 12 minutes later in 7.62 [2-100ths of a second out of 1st], matching a PR that she set in Saturday’s trials. On Saturday, she won the long jump with a lifetime-best 19-1 ¼.

Stephens is now a 10-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion – five triple jumps, two long jumps, two hurdles and a 4-by-100 – and she’s won 22 total medals in MAAC competition with two years of outdoor and one year of indoor eligibility remaining.

Stephens won the triple jump by seven inches over freshman Madelyn Valpy of Mt. St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md. Valpy hit 39-1 ¾ on her 3rd jump and was the only other competitor over 38 feet. Valpy also had a 39-1 on her 5th jump. But when she fouled on her final attempt, Stephens clinched her 5th conference triple jump title.

With the win in hand, Stephens soared 39-7 ¾ on her 6th jump – only an inch off her brand-new school record.

Stephens also had jumps of 38-6 ¼ and 38-9 ¾ to open the finals. On her four legal jumps, she averaged 39-2 – better than Valpy’s best jump.

On the all-time Rider indoor list, Stephens is No. 2 in the 60, No. 2 in the hurdles, No. 2 in the long jump and No. 1 in the triple jump. Outdoors, she’s 5th in the 100, 4th in the 100 hurdles, 5th in the long jump, 2nd in the triple jump and is part of the school-record 4-by-1.

Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo ties Penn Quaker school hurdles record with Ivy League victory!!!!!!

Paul VI’s Aliya Garozzo tied Penn’s hurdles record and won her 3rd Ivy League Championship Sunday at Harvard’s Gordon Track and Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass.

Garozzo ran a lifetime-best 8.29 in Saturday’s trials, leading all qualifiers into Sunday’s final, where she won easily in 8.37, nearly two meters ahead of 2nd-place Lauren Yeboah-Kodie of Brown.

Garozzo came into the meet with a PR of 8.49 from last year’s Ivy League Championships in Hanover, N.H. Her season-best before this weekend was 8.50 last month in a meet in Boston.

She ran only 9-100ths seconds off the Ivy League Championships meet record of 8.20 set at the 2018 meet in Hanover by Dartmouth’s Cha’Mia Rothwel, who also transferred to Duke.

Her 8.29 tied the Penn school record set by Skyla Wilson at the 2022 Ivy League Championships at the Armory. That was Wilson’s final indoor meet for Penn before she transferred to Miami and then to Duke.

Garozzo also placed 4th in the 400 in 54.95. She PR’d at 54.47 in Saturday’s trials, No. 5 in school history.

Garozzo ran on Penn’s 1st-place 4-by-4 team at last year’s outdoor Ivy League Championships at Franklin Field, but this is her first individual first place.

Garozzo is the 3rd South Jersey collegian to run 8.30 or faster this saeson. Winslow’s Tionna Tobias of Iowa ran 8.15 and Eastern’s Jailya Ash of UConn ran 8.19.
