In her first-ever 6,000-meter race, Clearview graduate Abby Waddington broke 22 minutes Saturday at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.

Waddington, a Boston University freshman, ran 21:59.2 and was B.U.’s 6th runner in the Gold Race in her second collegiate race. That’s the equivalent of running 18:20 for 5,000 meters and maintaining that pace for another 1,000 meters.

Waddington finished only 25 seconds behind B.U.’s 5th runner, freshman Kelly Jones, who ran 21:34.5.

Boston University placed 3rd out of 44 teams in the Gold Race. The Terriers are ranked 7th in the NCAA Division 1 Northeast Region

Moorestown grad Kate Inglis, a junior at Catholic University in Washington, placed 14th Saturday in the women’s White Race in the Paul Short Invitational.

Inglis ran an all-course lifetime-best 23:00.7 over Lehigh’s 6,000-meter course in Bethlehem and Lower Saucon Township and was the Cardinals’ first finisher.

Catholic, ranked No. 5 by the USTFCCCA in the NCAA Division 3 South Region, placed 4th in team scoring with 190 points.

Rowan junior Anna Sasse, a Williamstown graduate, placed 27th overall in 23:35.7.

Catholic’s 5th runner was Georgia Nussey, a junior from Haddonfield. Nussey ran 24:23.2. Widener junior Jaden Sweely of Cherokee was 74th in 24:32.7, and Susquehanna freshman Sophia Bostwick from Washington Township placed 88th in 24:46.4.

Schalick grad Sam Gerstenbacher, a Division 3 track and XC All-America at Elizabethtown, placed 8th out of more than 500 runners Saturday morning in the Men’s Open race at the Paul Short Invitational.

Gerstenbacher ran 24:39.8 over the historic 8,000-meter course at Lehigh University in Bethlehem (and partially in Lower Saucon Township).

Gerstenbacher, a post-grad, was only eight seconds short of his 8,000-meter PR of 24:30.0 on a much faster course at DREAM Park in Logan Township. He ran 24:54.1 on the same course in 2019 in his one previous race at Lehigh.

The Lehigh course was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1979 (won by Washington State’s Henry Rono) , 1983 (won by UTEP’s Zakarie Barie) and 1993 (won by Washington State’s Josephat Kapkory).

This was Gerstenbacher’s first race since Feb. 26, when he ran a PR 8:01.24 indoors in Boston.

Gerstenbacher ran 8:38.94 in the steeplechase in May of 2022 in New York, earning him a No. 36 U.S. ranking. That’s the fastest steeple ever run by a South Jersey native.

Rider senior Richie Castaneda from Camden Catholic placed 26th in 25:17.0 and former Cherokee runner Justin Kelly, now running for Shore Athletic Club, placed 51st in 25:42. Haddonfield grad George Andrus of Villanova, running unattatched, took 56th in 25:43.8. Cornell’s Brady Shute of Woodbury ran 26:09.6 and placed 88th.

The 50th anniversary of Holmdel County Park was first established in 1962 and first hosted the state meet and New Jersey Meet of Champions in 1976.

There were no state meets in 2020, so this is the 47th year that Holmdel County Park has been the site for the biggest XC meets in New Jersey. Three years from now it’ll be Year 50 for Holmdel, and maybe they should invite everybody who’s ever run there back for a 10,000-runner Holmdel Alumni 5,000. OK, maybe not.

In any case, Holmdel is a historic landmark when it comes to New Jersey cross country. The bowl was run in reverse in 1976 and the course didn’t expand to 5,000 meters until 1978. So our all-time Holmdel performance lists start with 1978 and include runners from six decades.

We’ll post the girls all-time list a little later today, but here’s the boys list, with all performances of 16:30 or faster. With a list this long, there are bound to be omissions and if you notice one please let me know in the comment section with as much information as possible.

Cinnaminson native Danny Kushay, a freshman at Cairn University in Middletown Township, Bucks County, placed 4th overall over the weekend at the Bryn Athyn 4K.

Kushay attended high school at Calvary Christian Academy, located in the Somerton section of Philly along the border of Lower Southampton, Bucks County, and Upper Moreland, Montgomery County.

Kushay has been the Highlanders’ first runner in all three of his college races so far. He ran 15:30 at Bryn Athyn

The Cherry Hill East girls packed all five scorers between 12th and 21st and rolled to 2nd place in the Varsity A race Saturday at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational.

Conestoga High of Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pa. – ranked 16th in Pennsylvania – won the team title with 39 points and Cherry Hill East was 2nd with 72, edging North Penn High of Towamencin Township, Montgomery County, Pa., by one point.

Sophomore Shaelea Conway, junior Cate Feudner and sophomore Ella Davidson placed 12th, 13th and 14th in 20:40.8, 20:54.3 and 21:09.5 for Cougars followed closely by sophomore Keira Conway [17th in 21:36.2] and junior Tiffany Guidarelli [21st in 21:47.9].

In an unofficial MileSplit merge from the four varsity races, Cherry Hill East placed 4th among all girls programs with 233 points, behind Conestoga [111], Pearl River, N.Y. [111] and Allentown of New Jersey [204].

Terrific team race Saturday by the Mainland Regional girls, who placed four finishers in the top 15 on the way to the team title in the Varsity II race at the Bowdoin Classic.

Junior Sofia Day finished 2nd in 19:13.3 and senior Gillian Lovett was 4th in 19:50.2 for Mainland, which outscored 2nd-place Mercy High of Middletown, Conn., 60-80, with Bayport (N.Y.) Blue Point 3rd with 83 points and Hunter College Campus Schools of Manhattan 4th at 84.

It was the first team race over 5,000 metres this year for Mainland, ranked 12th in New Jersey.

Junior Ava McDole placd 12th in 21:27.1, freshman Cecilia Foreman was 14th in 21:40.3 and senior Chloe Malone ran 22:07.5 for 28th. Mainland’s 6th and 7th runners – seniors Sophie Goldstein and Claudia Booth – finished 32nd and 36th. Mainland was the only school with all seven runners in the top 50.

Kingsway placed 6th with freshman Aubrey Bishop [27th in 22:07.0], sophomore Alyssa Reiter [33rd in 22:38.5], junior Rachael Wiley [35th in 22:44.3], senior Kendall Cramer [40th in 23:05.7] and junior Nicole Blum [44th in 23:14.1] in the scoring group.

Kingsway’s Ryan Duffy ran the fastest time ever by a freshman Saturday at the 16th annual Bowdoin Classic at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.

Duffy placed 9th in the varsity race in 16:27.0, which according to the MileSplit venue database broke the freshman meet record of 16:38.8 by Max Dimuccio of La Salle Academy in Providence, R.I., at the 2016 Bowdoin Classic.

Overall, Duffy’s time is 4th-fastest in course history by a freshman, with the three faster times coming much later in the season either at the New York Federation Championships or the Nike Cross Nationals Northeast Regional.

The race was Duffy’s second over 5,000 meters. He ran 16:25.7 at Cumberland Regional earlier this month in a Tri-County Conference batch meet. He won the South Jersey Shootout at DREAM Park and ran 15:40.0, but because the lead vehicle made a wrong turn, the course was significantly shorter than 5,000 meters.

Duffy’s time is fastest by a New Jersey freshman at Bowdoin Park by nearly half a minute. CBA’s Gavin Schmitt ran 16:56.6 Saturday in a JV race.

The previous South Jersey freshman course best at Bowdoin Park was 16:58.6 by Haddonfield’s Derek Gess at the 2015 Bowdoin Classic.

Duffy’s time is 13th-fastest overall among all South Jersey runners at Bowdoin Park. Jonathan Vitez of Haddonfield and Cherry Hill East’s Aaron Groff both broke 16 minutes on the layout along the eastern banks of the Hudson River. Vitez ran 15:41.5 at the 2009 Bowdoin Classic, and Groff ran 15:52.7 at the 2015 Nike Cross Nationals.

The previous-fastest time by a Gloucester County runner at Bowdoin Park is Joe Grandizio’s 16:35.0 when he placed 7th in the 2016 Bowdoin Classic.

Sophomore Riley Austin and senior Riley Slootsky finished in the top 10 to pace Haddonfield to a dramatic team title in the Varsity 1 race at the Bowdoin Park Classic in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.

Took day to track down the results, but we finally have them, and Haddonfield had a fantastic race in its first big race this fall, edging Pingry and Corning, N.Y, 81-85-86.

Haddonfield, ranked No. 2 in New Jersey and No. 1 among public schools, packed its five scorers in the top 25 and all six of its finishers in the top 30.

Austin placed 7th in 20:20.7 over 5,000 meters and Slootsky 9th in 20:27.9 for the Lady Bulldogs. Then senior Anna Stolarick, junior Katherine Asher and junior Dylan Melcher all packed between 21:05 and 21:18 in 20th, 21st and 25th.

With four runners across, Corning had 53 points, Haddonfield 57 and Pingry 58

Melcher provided the difference in the final score, finishing one place ahead of Pingry’s 4th runner and three places in front of Pingry’s 5th runner and nine spots ahead of Corning’s 5th runner.

Freshman Harper Benjamin backed up Haddonfield’s top five, finishing 31st overall in 21:35.6. She was the 2nd freshman finisher.

Haddonfield had the low score as well in a merge of the two varsity races with 124 points, one fewer than Pingry and four fewer than Corning.

Mainland Regional won the Varsity 2 race with 60 points and was 5th in the merge. More on the Mustangs’ race soon!

The same Bowdoin Park course located along the East Bank of the Hudson River an hour north of the Tappan Zee Bridge is used for the Nike Cross Country Northeast Regional in November.

Cherry Hill East used some tremendous pack running to win the Varsity A team title at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational Saturday in Jackson.

The Cougars packed all five scorers between 8th and 16th and all seven runners in the top 20 and edged Conestoga of Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pa., by one point – 62-63. Colts Neck – ranked 7th in New Jersey – was 3rd with 70 and Manalapan – ranked 13th – was 4th with 81 points.

Cherry Hill East is not ranked in the most recent MileSplit poll but obviously should be and most likely will be next week.

Raine Guidarelli, Nikhil Raman, Brody Bogos, Cole Pizzo and Colin Moore packed in 23 seconds in wet, rainy conditions at Great Adventure.

Guidarelli led the Cougars in 8th place in 16:37.2, with Raman also in the top 10 in 10th place in 16:41.3. Bogos ran 16:49.2 for 13th, Pizzo was 15th in 16:59.8 and Moore 16th in 17:00.5.

They were backed up by Alvin Lin [17th in 17:01.4] and Brandon Lyons [20th in 17:15.2], giving East seven finishers in 38 seconds.

It takes seven runners to make a team, and this race is exactly why. After four runners, Conestoga led Cherry Hill East 36-46. But Pizzo, Moore, Lin and Lyons all finished ahead of Conestoga’s 5th runner, and that was the difference in the team standings.
