South Jersey Group 4 girls 400-meter dash was fastest and deepest EVER!!!!!

On Friday, we wrote about Eastern freshman Jewel Ash, who won the South Jersey Group 4 400-meter dash in 56.23.

What we didn’t have a chance to mention was the rest of the race, which was ridiculously fast in every spot.

Ash didn’t break the meet record — that belongs to Oakcrest’s Nijgia Snapp, who ran 54.9 hand-timed in 2009.

But the next nine runners across the line ran the fastest time for place in the history of the South Jersey Group 4 girls 400-meter dash!

So this race had the fastest second-place time ever, the fastest third-place time ever … all the way down to 10th place!

Let’s take a look at Friday’s race and the previous fastest times by place (keep in mind that Nance, Hickson and Allen all ran their times out of an “unseeded” heat, the sixth of seven 400 sections):

Mack, Dancy, Gerstenbacher, Harrison re-write all-time S.J. 100-Meter Dash List!!!!!

There was a ridiculous bunch of super-fast 100-meter dash times in the various South Jersey girls meets Friday, and the activity left South Jersey sprinters ranked in the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots on the 2017 New Jersey list going into states.

It starts with Williamstown senior Bria Mack, who ran a New Jersey #1 11.65 in the trials of the South Jersey Group 4 meet at Egg Harbor. Mack’s previous PR was 11.68 from the finals of sectionals last year, which she won on the way to winning the Meet of Champions.

Mack went on to win the final with a slower time, but the 11.65 stands as the No. 11 time in state history and No. 5 in South Jersey history. It’s fastest by any New Jersey sprinter since Olivia Baker ran 11.64 in 2014 and fastest by a South Jersey girl since Olympic gold medalist English Gardner of Eastern ran 11.56 to place second behind Myasia Jacobs in the 2010 Meet of Champions.

In the South Jersey Group 3 meet at Delsea, Winslow junior Shakira Dancy also PR’d in the trials with an 11.71. That broke her previous PR of 11.89 from the finals of the Olympic Conference meet earlier this month at Washington Township. Dancy then won the final in 11.75.

Dancy’s time is No. 16 in state history and No. 6 in South Jersey history. It also breaks the school record of 11.73 set in 2014 by Torie Robinson, who now runs for Clemson.

Delsea senior Cecelia Gerstenbacher, the state Group 3 champ at 55 meters indoors, chased Dancy to the finish line in the Group 3 race and crossed the line in 11.89. Her PR coming into the meet was 12.05 from the Gloucester County meet at Delsea, but she PR’d twice Friday, first with an 11.90 in the trials.

The fourth South Jersey girl under 12 seconds Friday was junior Aliya Harrison of Sterling, who won the Group 2 100 at Delsea in 11.91. Harrison’s previous PR was a 12.22 from winning Group 2 states last year at Northern Burlington, so she lowered her time by a whopping 31-100ths of a second.

Gerstenbacher and Harrison now rank No. 17 and No. 18 on the all-time South Jersey list.

Four girls, four sub-12’s, four PRs!

Mack, Dancy and Gerstenbacher were the three-fastest girls from all the various sectionals Friday, according to NJ.milesplit’s merge, and Harrison was fifth.

The only other girl in New Jersey under 12 seconds was Amaya Chadwick of Union Catholic, who ran 11.90 to win the Parochial A race at Egg Harbor. Chadwick, the high hurdles runner-up at last year’s M-of-C, has a PR of 11.83 from the Union County meet earlier this month at Governor Livingston in Berkeley Heights.

Let’s take a look at the up-dated all-time state list! We put together a list of every girl in state history that’s broken 12 seconds fully automatic! Please list any corrections, additions and omissions in the comments section!

Including Rancocas Valley’s Aliyah Taylor, who ran 11.95 earlier this year but has been hurt since Penn Relays, that’s a ridiculous FIVE South Jersey girls who’ve broken 12 seconds this year.

The most in any previous year was three in 2013, when Robinson (11.91), Haddonfield’s Emily Carson (11.94) and Ciera Ismail of Schalick (11.98) all went under.

But for example, from 1985 through 1994, NO South Jersey girls ran faster than 12 seconds. From 1985 through 2006, a span of 22 years, only six did. On Friday, four did.

Also, from 1982 through 2016 — a span of 35 years — only Gardner and Amandi Rhett ran 11.72 or faster. On Friday, Mack and Dancy both did it.

Kingsway’s Rachel Vick runs MASSIVE 1,600 PR, #6 in S.J. history, fastest by Gloucester County girl in 35 years!!!!!!

Kingsway senior Rachel Vick ran away with the South Jersey Group 4 1,600 Friday afternoon, lowering her PR a whopping seven seconds in the process.

Vick, who entered the race at Egg Harbor with a PR of 4:59.78 from this year’s Gloucester County meet at Delsea. She ran 4:52.88, so that’s a 6.9-second improvement in one race!

Vick led four runners under 5:05 and ran away from Niamh Hayes of Howell, who also went sub-5, finishing second in 4:59.69, some 35 meters back. Hayes was the indoor Meter of Champions 3,200 champ with a sensational 10:31.98.

But on Friday, Vick got the better of Hayes, recording the fastest time by a Gloucester County runner since legendary Michelle Rowen of Washington Township ran 4:43.16 for a full mile indoors at Easterns in Boston in 1983 (she ran 4:41.5 hand-timed in 1982 outdoors).

Vick’s time is No. 6 in South Jersey history and third-fastest ever by a girl from a school other than Haddonfield.

Vick broke Rowen’s meet record of 4:53.4, set in 1983.

Salem’s Jonathan Taylor runs all-time South Jersey #7 in 100-meter dash!!!!!

Salem’s Jonathan Taylor, the defending Meet of Champions winner, lowered his 100 PR from 10.55 to 10.49 Friday at the South Jersey Group 1 meet at Egg Harbor Township and moved into the No. 7 spot on the all-time South Jersey list.

Taylor ran his previous PR of 10.55 at last year’s South Jersey Group 1 meet. He missed the meet record of 10.47, set in 2009 by James Brown of Glassboro, by just 2-100ths of a second.

Eastern freshman Jewel Ash doubles the 400 and 400IH at SJ-4 meet with two SMOKING times!!!

Eastern freshman Jewel Ash, competing in her first sectional meet, won the 400 in 56.23 and the 400 intermediates in 1:02.30 on Day 1 of the South Jersey Group 4 meet at Egg Harbor Friday.

Ash’s 1:02.30 is fastest by a South Jersey freshman since Krystal Cantey of Winslow ran 1:00.74 as a freshman in 2006 when she won the Meet of Champions. The 56.23 is fastest by a South Jersey freshman since Ste’yce McNeil of Winslow ran 56.06 in 2012.

In the intermediates, only two New Jersey freshmen have run faster than Ash since Cantey, both in 2014 — Jenna Reid of Middletown North ran 1:02.29 and future Olympian Sydney McLaughlin ran a national freshman record 55.63.

Ash is the first freshman girl to even place in the top six in the South Jersey Group 4 intermediates since Carly Pettipaw of Lenape was fourth back in 2012.

Her time is 13th-fastest in South Jersey Group 4 sectional history and she becomes the No. 10 performer:

Outlaw broke the Central Jersey Group 3 and overall Central Jersey sectional meet record of 46.95 set by Charles Cox of Monmouth in 2007.

Cinnaminson goes 1-2-3 in South Jersey Group 2 shot put, with all three over 50 feet!!!!!

Cinnaminson recorded a rare 1-2-3 sweep  Friday, taking the top three spots in the South Jersey Group shot put at Delsea, with all three throwers surpassing 50 feet.

Junior Kamron Kobolak won the event, extending his PR from 54-3 to 55-6. Senior Mateus Medeiros was second at 50-9, improving on his PR of 48-7 by more than two feet. And senior Frank Stepnowski, who has already thrown as far as 53 feet, placed third at 50-2.

That’s 24 points in one event for the Pirates!

This is the seventh straight year Cinnaminson has had at least one medalist in the sectional shot put competition. Here are their medalists the last six years.

2016: Kamron Kobolak, 2nd [50-5]

Jessica Woodard BOMBS a personal-best 185-10 to advance to NCAA Championships in discus!!!!!

Oklahoma junior Jessica Woodard bombed a personal-best 185-10 on her third and final attempt in the discus at the NCAA West Regional preliminaries in Austin on Friday.

She is now the ONLY U.S. woman to throw 60-plus feet in the shot put and 185-plus feet in the discus this year!

WOW!!!!!

Woodard, a 2013 Cherokee High School graduate, was already sitting in ninth place and appeared to be heading to Eugene in the disc after two throws, but she made sure of it on her final attempt, adding nearly six feet to her previous PR of 179-11, set earlier this month at the Big 12 championships.

Woodard, the No. 15 seed, finished sixth. The top 12 qualify for nationals next month at Hayward Field. Woodard will compete in the shot put on Saturday.

Woodard just missed the school record of 186-1, set in 2010 by Brittany Borman at a meet in Denton, Texas.

Her mark is No. 17 among all U.S. women this year. Since nobody in the East Regional threw 170 feet, she’ll go into NCAAs as the No. 6 seed in the discus.

Woodard was sitting in sixth place after opening with a 176-2 throw, not far off her PR, and dropped to ninth place after fouling on her second throw. As it turned out, the 176-2 would have advanced her as the 11th-place finisher.

Woodard is ranked seventh among U.S. women in the shot with her PR of 60-3 at Big 12s.

Rowan’s Benjamin and Toliver run two-fastest 110HH qualifying times at NCAA Division 3 nationals!!!

Rowan junior David Benjamin from Freehold Township and senior Chase Tolliver from Oakcrest lead all qualifiers into the finals of the 110-meter high hurdles at the NCAA Division 3 track championships.

Benjamin ran 14.23 and Toliver 14.27 during Friday’s semifinals. No other hurdlers ran under 12.40. Benjamin ran within 1-100th of a second of his PR of 14.22, and Toliver lowered his PR from 14.34. The wind was a legal 2.0 meters per second – the limit for a race to be considered wind-legal.

This is the first time two hurdlers from the same school have gone under 14.30 at Division 3 nationals since 1997, when Tyrone Watkins and Alonzo Wiggins of Lincoln University in Oxford Township, Chester County, ran 13.95 and 14.16 for a 1-2 finish in the finals in LaCrosse, Wisc.

The nine-man final is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

In addition to the top two seeds in the 110 highs final, Rowan has the No. 1 seed in the intermediate hurdles finals in Anthony Salemo, the No. 3 seed in the 4-by-4, the No. 6 seed in the 4-by-1 final and the No. 6 seed in the 3,000 steeplechase in Kevin Veltre.
