The all-time South Jersey boys 3,200-meter top-50 (and how I learned about Dan Matousch)!!!!!

My favorite thing about these lists is learning about these absolute beasts from the 1970s, like Mike Butynes, Jerry Andrews, Mike Elder and Greg Stremmel, who are still among the fastest two-milers in state history!

The problem is that I get so wrapped up in studying these dudes that it makes me forever to put the lists together!

Look at Haddon Township – they are No. 2, No. 10 and No. 11 on this list, with three others in the top 50! Haddon Township has SIX GUYS who’ve run 9:14 or faster. That’s insane! Especially for a school that’s been Group 2 for much of its existence.

Paul VI and Cherokee have five each and Highland and Cinnaminson have four each. That means those five programs are responsible for 24 of the 50 names on this list!

I came across a new name yesterday, Dan Matousch, who ran 9:15.5 for Haddon Township in 1973. Never heard of him before so started reading everything I could about him.

Found this story by Dick “Hoops” Weiss about Dan from the May 30, 1973, Courier-Post. I didn’t even know Hoops wrote for the Courier-Post!

Here are the first five installments in the all-time South Jersey top-50:

Boys outdoor 100-meter dash
Boys outdoor 200-meter dash
Boys outdoor 400-meter dash
Boys outdoor 800-meter run
Boys outdoor 1,600-meter run

OK, enough babbling.

It’s time for the all-time South Jersey boys outdoor 3,200! Two-mile times are converted using the standard formula, and if you see a mistake or omission, please let me know in the comment section and not on Twitter.

    Roob,
Thanks for posting. Bringing back lots of great memories. Think that cinnaminson coach deserves some kudos. Less than 15 distance runner most years. An old runner from the 70s offered this:

Reuben has Mike Elders year wrong – it would have been 73 or 74 not 79

Not a major deal, just know he had to compete against him.

Hey Todd! Yeah, that’s just a typo … Elder was Class of ’73!

And couldn’t agree more about Fourney. The guy is one of the best distance coaches ever. Hope you’re doing well and thanks for the heads up!

Nice work, Reuben. Possible correction: unless Jason DeJoseph ran an imperial 2-mile somewhere else that year, he ran 3200 in MOC–no “y” necessary. Can you name the other two sophomores in that epic race?

Hey Larry! Thanks so much for your note! Really appreciate it! I’m learning so much about runners I never really knew about, including yourself. It’s incredible how so many performances from the 1960s and 1970s still hold up so well all these years later! I ran high school track in North Jersey in the mid-1970s and it’s neat to see times from some of the people I raced against, like Kevin Byrne, Rich Rothschild and Tom Tomai! Hope you’re well and thanks again for reading!

Roob, Thank you much for taking the time to put this list together. My son came across this list the day and has been asking questions about my high-school running career. Yesterday, my wife took him to the track down the street from our home, and he ran 2 laps non stop. I think he’s caught the running bug. I’ll definitely keep you posted on his progress. Thank you for keeping us relevant. Your work has inspired my son! Stay blessed ✌
